The festival weekend is fast approaching, so let's get our favourite Irish music out there and share what we love.
So what is your all time favourite Irish song? All Irish genres welcome.
Please no long lists, just a song or two that means something to you. 
I'll start with The Parting Glass. It's like a gut punch whenever I hear it. |

The first live gig I went to was The Pogues whilst still at school in the UK
Debatable whether this is Scottish or Irish but ...
I'm a Man You Don't Meet Everyday sang by Cait o Riordan made me want to move here 20+ years ago and I have no regrets |

The Night Visiting Song, McAlpines Fusiliers and Raglan Road are all great Irish classics.
Love some Saw Doctors too, great lyrics, local, real. They always remind me of my carefree teenage years!

Since someone mentioned the Parting Glass is Scottish originally, how are we classifying Irish music? For example Galway Girl was actually written and performed by Steve Earle originally with Sharon Shannon. Since he is American does that invalidate it? |

Not naming one of their songs but I'll never forget seeing the Pogues in Wembley Arena (not stadium) and thinking the floor was going to break from the crowd jumping so much. Mental gig!

Maybe it matters to the purists and scholars. I'm sure the history of the parting glass is a very interesting one and how it's become a staple in Irelands repertoire. A lot of Irish greats have popularised it. I didn't know it was Scottish.
A bit like Paul Brady - The Lakes of Pontchartrain, in my head I picture an Irish man lamenting about his creole love but it's an American ballad. Sure what the hell, we'll allow it  |

The thing for me is, lists become boring Somebody wants to do a longer one, a better one, another one adding more to that list. I think it's nice to talk about music than list it. What moves you personally. I felt your excitement in your opening paragraph, you can't get that in a list. Good choices on it though. Now where is my whip!

Some people rave about Van Morrison's Astral weeks album but the Moondance album always gets to me. "Into the Mystic" is sublime.
When I was a lot younger, I was really low after some bad events but I heard "Brand New Day" from the same album and it helped me cope. |
