Did you see a camera flash? Highly unlikely that you'd be done for 3klms over the limit. If so id be looking to see when the camera was last calibrated as they are not super accurate

No o didn't see a flash but is that always the case? I just thought that was a myth but what do I know? Good idea about the calibration!

The vans don't flash, you should be ok 3km over, usually a 10% leeway on the limit.

Whatever about the camera calibration, the vehicle one allows for a lead foot aswell.

Truth be told, 83 on the car clock is probably somewhere closer to 75-78 in reality!

Thanks everyone! You are really putting my mind at ease, I almost never speed it was just a mistake on my side.

Anyone works or worked as a speed cam operator? I'd love their input

Speedometers in cars are calibrated to show about 3kph faster than you are actually going, plus there is a leeway with the speed van cameras so you should definitely be fine

All cars in Europe are set so they are actually doing less speed that the speedometer shows they have to be that way by European law .

If you put on the satnav on your phone it gives you your correct speed as it live tracking you on GPS.

So the answer to your question is you won't get done as we're probably only doing 78 kmph at the most . Hope this puts your mind at ease

My understanding is that there’s a ~5% tolerance on the speed camera plus your speedometer under reads by ~5% so reckon you'll be grand

You mean 'over reads'

OP, if you were brought to court because you were 3km/hr over the speed limit, you could successfully fight it using the margins of error on both the car speedometer and speed van instruments (which are multiplicative when used together)

I don’t think they flash anymore but I could stand to be corrected

Also OP, as far as I know, it depends on how near you are to the van at the time. As you could be under 80kms by the time the picture is taken. I've never seen a speed van camera flash & I've past a fair few of them over the year's. Just like other's, unless they flash if you cough speeding.

I agree with the other's & say your safe enough with it.

They dont flash and they can get you from 1km away maybe bit more i got done few times but stick to limits now as not worth getting the points

Also a note to people that are still unaware

Speed vans Also set up On motorways!!!

Both marked & unmarked

They have they’re own places to set up,

But I also think I have seen them at the Garda locations as well

( Waze ) is a great alternative Free app instead of google maps it gives You live locations of speed detection vans and Garda speed etc

It works off people marking the locations when they seen them while passing so it’s not 100% accurate,

As long as someone else marks it then it will warn you a few kilometres before you reach them

People travelling in the opposite direction also used to use the flash flash method

If you were tagged at 106km on camera I would be fairly confident you were going well beyond 110km when they pinged ya

The focus on the camara is only good for 150/200m so if you were back further than that ur ok

Those speed cameras are calibrated monthly, you won't get a fine for 83 in an 80 zone

There is no leeway!! I was doing 108 in 100 zone- fine and penalty points.

I got pinged for sure but I am more careful now , 122/125 max on the motorway , I often was in excess of 150 so I’ve calmed down , most standard cars can do 160-180 comfortably now , never mind a high performance car

Some folks above obviously don't seem to understand what a 5 % leeway means.

Yes you were done for 106 in a 100 because 5% means 105 and you were above.

Equally the speedo reads about 80 when doing around 77-80 but more like 150 when you're actually 146-148.

I've tracked this in both Waze and Google maps.

Op you should be fine, not fined

It's up to the speed van's operator what to set the trigger speed at, the old gatso vans were always 20kmph over the limit, the lower the leeway, the more fines issued, money making racket....
