8th of December to me is the official start of Christmas. Where the country folk go to the big smoke for their Xmas shopping. Is it just a cork thing or a national thing? It also means I can wear Xmas jumpers from now on. |

Never forget over 20 years ago I worked in a well known Cork clothing store.
A lady came in on the 8th of December. Happened to be a Friday too.
Herself and her friend up from the country for their Christmas shopping.
But somewhere between the train station and our store she lost her wallet.
All her Christmas money was in it.
She was absolutely heartbroken. Never forget it ! |

It was and possibly still is a national thing. Remember helping a lady punch her parking ticket. Had not been punched since the previous 8th of December |

"Growing up in Dublin the 8th Dec used to be known as Culchie shopping day. We'd stay out of the city centre that day and let them have at it lol. "
Used to be funny watching them treat Guineys as if it was Harrods … the look of amazement on there faces |

I remember going to the city on the 8th of December. It was a,chuch holiday but most of the shops would be open .
Most households had only one car those days and all the shops were closed Sundays and most people worked 6 days so it was probably the only day both parents were off work and had use of the car to go to city to do the Christmas shopping.
The closest thing to online shopping that time was ordering from the likes of the Family Album |
