I recently made a home for two lovely 4 month old kittens I found at the GSPCA.

The internet is full of advice about kitties but I'm open to any and all advice.

Mainly I would like to be able to buy their food and litter in bulk somewhere other than a pet store or supermarket as it's appallingly expensive. Their foster mother really spoiled them and I would have to remortgage my house to continue with those products.

Also one of them refuses to use her litter tray. They have one each and I've moved her tray to where she poo's and she just goes beside it.

I’ve never raised a cat so I can’t help with that side of it but I’ve used Zooplus for buying in bulk and found their prices reasonable especially for specific dietary needs.

Best of luck with it, I find owning pets to be very rewarding

Don't know a lot about cat food but I'd get them each a bell on their collar so any birds will know they are about as they get older

Maybe move her food bowl to where she is pooing and her litter tray somewhere else. Animals generally don’t like to mess where they eat.

Make way for the crazy cat lady

Credentials: cat mamma to 7

I had the same problem with one of mine re the litter tray. He would go beside it but never in it. I just kept popping him in it when I saw him heading that direction. More often than not he'd get out again to do his business but consistency is key. Keep doing it, calmly and quietly. Your kitten will also learn from seeing the other one (the phrase copy cat was coined for a reason!) so make sure there's a line of sight between the two trays.

If still no joy, you might want to try a different type of litter or switch from an open to a covered tray (or vice versa)

This is a great site for buying in bulk (they also have a site called Bitiba and prices do vary between the two). Maybe try an alternative form of litter. I have cats that like the clumping flushable wood (A Little Bit of Litter) and ones that like clumping grains (tigerino). Before buying large amounts I would just try one in a different tray, you may find that both your kittens want to switch as mine did.

As someone else said food, water and litter all need to be kept in separate areas as cats don't like cross contamination between the three.

Good luck and happy kitten tickling.

Kx

Cheers. I might switch the food and tray spots up and see what happens.

They can see each others trays alright and there's plenty of distance between the food litter and water.

I do keep an eye on her but she always seems to go when my back is turned so maybe a covered tray is the way forward if the wee shite wants her privacy. She was litter trained in her foster moms house but I hear out of the three siblings she was the most problematic.

Had a look at zooplus. It's great supplier. The prices are pretty much the same as the rest.

Maybe the question is what brand of kitten food is reasonably priced and still decent quality?

They were getting Royal Canin and I really just couldn't afford that without putting my two actual children on rations

Maybe see if your children like Royal Canin and then it can be a one stop shop!

Royal Canin!

Woof! Or, in this case.. meow!

Can't speak about bulk food options here in Ireland but K's mum makes her own dog food from cheap veg and offcuts from the butcher (often given to her for free).. the veg can sometimes be uber cheap/free too if you know some local farmers/greengrocers/etc. that offload their excess

I know it's more labor intensive and takes planning- you can bulk prep and freeze a lot but of course you need to have the time and patience for it. Good luck OP- you're brilliant x

I have a sister with lots of cats. She shops up north in bulk every now and then for cat and dog food because apparently it's much cheaper there. Why not Google Northern Irish stores to compare prices if they are happy to ship down south?

As for litter tray use - I had a kitten who slept where it did its business and would happily eat where it did its business too - dirty little f*cker, it was . The other kitten was completely different. I think it really is a matter of training, trial and error with the kind of litter and litter tray you use.

Best of luck

She will get the hang of the litter tray eventually. It's not uncommon for toileting to be problematic after rehoming. Good luck!

Try using the crystals for litter , they are worth the extra money.

Sometimes they dont use the boxes to say fuck you ....and even pee in your shoes

Cats are cool but evil.

Should have said, I use Harrington's pouches (£16 for a box of 40 up here in Tesco) and Purina One Bifensis dry kitten food

I used to have cats and found Hills cat food very good. If you do change brand of food do it on a phased basis as that will be better for them. Try and avoid wet foods and stick with dry foods, as they generally will get enough fluids from water. Keep the water clean and fresh and the water bowl clean as they can get finicky if the water has been there a while.

If the kitten is feeling stressed then toilet habits can be more difficult. Keeping the cat litter clean after they have used it is important as if they go back and it hasn’t been cleaned since last use they can dislike that.

Good luck as let’s face it….Cats Rule!

Thanks for all your great tips everyone.

So for feeding.

Their foster mom was giving them a squeeze pouch each in the morning and the evening and had their bowl topped up with dry food in between so I've been sticking with that routine for now.

They don't eat a lot of the dry food to be fair.

You’ll see soon enough that they have their way of telling you what they want! Mine is a fussy fecker, she’s on hypoallergenic dry food (I get the large bag from zooplus and lasts 2/3 months) she gets a wet pouch in the morning and a small 50g tin of tuna in the evening and grazes on the dry food. You’ll find all sorts of advice on the internet, some swear by a raw food diet but it’s expensive and time consuming. Also most adult cats are actually lactose intolerant but mine has a little bit of butter most days and she’s fine.

My local vets does a plan where I pay €15 a month and gives me unlimited free vet visits a year and discounted vax shots. End up saving a fortune coz I’ve had to bring her down to the vets so many times over the years.

I wish you could post a picture of them

On the kitty who is pooing beside the litter tray, is it the same litter that the other fosterer was using? The kitten might not like it if it’s a different type of litter. Cats are naturally very clean and pooing outside of the tray is generally their way of telling you they aren’t happy. It could just be a settling in thing, cats also hate change and hate their routine being changed.

Yeah I made sure to buy they same litter they were trained on.

They've only been here a week so definitely out of sorts and probably missing their sibling and the other pets in their foster home. They did tell me she was a princess with her litter

They will settle in, mine took a good few wks to stop hiding behind the bedroom door and hissing and spitting. She was semi feral when I got her, so patience and giving her space was all that was needed!

There’s a spray to stop cats peeing or pooing in areas you don’t want. Vet or some hardware place has it. Keep giving out to the pussy immediately move it to liter box to finish. They won’t like the scent of their own poo or the spray so putting their nose near it when they do bold will help.

Also try a veterinary supply business. You can buy in bulk there. Hopefully they will like it. If not try a beef stock cube like oxo n sprinkle on it. Or mix with a cat/dog food tin with meat in gravy.

Enjoy your pussy. It’ll be the only pussy that doesn’t give you back talk lol.

Each to their own ways, but honestly this will often lead to a more stressed out kitten, especially while she's still adjusting to new surroundings.

Have faith OP... she's going to the general area and that's a big positive. She will get it eventually.

+1 on the Zooplus suggestion. Excellent customer service as well, and you rack up points on every order which you can use to purchase toys, etc!

Good luck with the pussies!!

I've 3 pusseys and i love them. They never complain and always greet me with a whisker. They get on well with the 2 dogs. Also have a few horses and a load of cow's. If you saw my feed bill you'd get a shock. Wouldn't change it for the world. Happy days xx
