Seems to be happening more and more often and in different places due to this inclement weather….Cork, Wexford, Newry to name but a few places. I hope nobody here has been impeded as a result of this heavier than normal rainfall in recent times…. |

Has that not always been the case though? |

"Yeah a business owner taking it out onbone of the council workers."
Apparently the whole of newry is built on a flood plain and nobody can get flood insurance as a result of a similar flood 35 years ago so they will most likely bear the cost of it themselves |

You have to feel sorry for those people who's livelihood has been taken from them and who's homes have been wrecked.. No insurance cover for flooding. Wonder if government will step in and give aid to them. A lot of jobs lost as well. |

The problem in Newry is the canal and river run parallel so if the fast flowing river bursts it's banks it spills into the canal and that adds to the problem.
A flood alleviation scheme 20 odd years ago took over a year to install and within weeks there was more flooding because the release valves were installed back to front so they closed rather than opening.
That was resolved but it has never been as bad as it is currently. |

Nearly 100 businesses in Newry have been devastated.
Many will never be reopen because they were unable to get flood insurance.
The flooding was caused by sheerincompetence. Fact.
If the main lock gates at Victoria lock were open no flooding would have occured as the canal would have turned into a river |

Hopefully they will get some sort of compensation payment from the Government |

We are just minutes away from Newry and the main roads in and out for us still flooded.
Luckily some of the back roads are higher up and you can get around.
However this issue happens every time the rain is bad as they don’t do anything substantial and meaningful to solve the issues. |

The problem with that is the river is tidal and they can't open the lock gates when the tide is in because that would just make the problem even worse. |

They did open and close them to no avail.
The locks are damaged and leak water, people involved don’t think it helped at all as the water was going right back up the canal.
They’ve known this for a while plus all the other parts of the canal damaged, never mind the sewer system is in a bad way. |

Thinking about it again I don't think any infrastructure could cope with that amount of rainfall..over a months rain in 1 night on top of 3 night heavy rain |
