Nope Irish people are adverse to comments. You could be wearing a €500 Gucci tshirt, someone compliments you and an Irish person will say “thanks, penneys”. We hate receiving compliments |

I'm not sure if women realise the full extent of this, but if you pay a random guy a compliment on his looks. It will probably brighten their whole day, and will be something he will be bragging to his grandkids about in years to come. |

A 500e Gucci t-shirt? I don't think that'd be complimented. I'm sure the words "notions" "did you get that from penny's" and the "state of that" would be a more common response
But I get what you mean |

After a family wedding a few years ago I commented to my mother about how well my a certain woman, I had been talking to, looked. My mother asked if I had told her that. I said no as I felt it might be a bit creepy. She said, you should always tell a woman when she looks well no matter who it is. Incidentally my mother also often told me she used to love hearing wolf whistles.
Was she just old school and are compliments just creepy? I know wolf whistling nowadays is considered harassment. |

It's an Irish thing to feel uncomfortable receiving a complement. So we say things like, Ya feckin egit, meaning I love you,.....etc |
