Name a pub - just show up.

Here s a suggestion:

Someone throws out the name of a largish, busy pub and a date for a social. People just show up, chat if they want, don't if they don't want. An opportunity for a social, but just in a normal pub and no separate rooms or anything. Dabbers mixed in with normal punters. No invites, no paid attendance. No one knows if you happened to randomly stumble into the venue or if you heard about it from Fab.

What's there to lose?

Belfast

It's a public forum and people who aren't members can read everything written in here so there could be a lot of lurkers turning up if a location is mentioned.

Depends on the pub it might work in a city pub but it wouldn't work in a country pub

This happens already on here although the pubs aren’t named publicly. I was at one in Limerick not so long ago. 20 or so fabbers turned up, didn’t cost anything and it was a good laugh. We weren’t even segregated from the public, imagine that

Sounds like fun to me even just meeting new people and having a few drinks and a laugh sounds great if I get lucky that’s just a bonus. The thing is how do you know who are the people from fab and who aren’t?

Or maybe people just enjoy going to an organised event, in a nice place with music and food, without worrying about some of the randomers that lurk on here, showing up?

The problem is in the first word of your suggestion, “Someone”.

It can’t be announced in public on the forum so a thread must be started, managed, monitored, PM’s will have to be monitored, read, replied to, filters set appropriate to the thread, group started if required, in short, I’d imagine it’s a lot of work, less so if you like spreadsheets or organising things, but still a lot of work for “Someone” to do and not as easy as it seems I’m sure, not to mention pick a place, date, time to suit everyone……

Great respect for anyone organising socials or events………

But the absolute best way for anyone looking to get out there and meet people, yes, some are verified only, but there are lots for people without verifications too.

"It's a public forum and people who aren't members can read everything written in here so there could be a lot of lurkers turning up if a location is mentioned."

I've been to one around 5 years ago where we weren't segregated from the public and we collectively as a group decided to post the venue on our status updates just to give people a chance to come along and join the group/introduce themselves.

Started feeling quite uncomfortable after about 2h as not one person actually came up to us to say hello, but suddenly quite a few men were just sitting at different tables having a pint conveniently facing our group.

Call me paranoid if you wish, maybe some of them were genuine punters who just came in for a pint after work, still the vibe has completely shifted...

On other hand - every single one of the ladies lunches that I've organized has been in regular bars/restaurants without any purposely segregated rooms or hired venues, completely free to attend to all who wished to come (men are always allowed to join in the evening). We just never post the actual venue publicly. If someone wants to come along- they better send a private message and a face photo so we know that they're not sitting in the corner anonymously creeping away.

Co. Cork

I spotted Jaffa doughnuts in a shop the other day. So are they biscuits that think that they are cakes with holes in the middle or are they doughnuts that want to be cakes that could actually be biscuits.

The ultimate jaffa conundrum.
