I absolutely hate taking the pill.

Off it for a year.

Went back on it a few weeks ago as an extra precaution.

It has driven me insane these last few weeks.

I know it’s the pill cause kids are back to school makes my life far easier work wise etc.

But since I started wearing the evra patch again. Mood swings negative mindset etc is taking over.

I always try to stay as positive as I can so I know it’s a side effect from taking the pill.

Ladies if any of ye could advise about the bar coil or other forms of contraception before there is someone murdered I would be very grateful.

Pm privately if you wish.

Thank you xxxx

Hiya, I had the merina coil for years and the best part was no period at all.

I did have a pretty low libido for a long time at the same time but couldn't find anything saying that it was a side effect. All I could find was that it could actually increase your sex drive. So the two things were hopefully not connected as I'll be getting it replaced soon

I had that in no period but found a few things that made after 5 years to not get it again

Watch Pill Revolution on channel 4, presented by Davina McCall. Very eye opening to the side effects of the pill, some of which you've described and they discuss alternatives and how backwards thinking contraception still is for woman.

Hope you find something that suits you better

I’ve done my research on contraceptive and there is far more than just mood swings as side effects unfortunately.

Id say if all women had the choice not to take it they wouldn’t take it.

Condoms are great accidents can happen though then you need to take the morning after pill.

That’s horrible altogether.

You’re not the 1st woman to say that to me.

I’m on and off contraceptives since I’m 17.

Never once did my GP inform me to be careful when taking antibiotics!

You think that be one of the 1st things they would tell you !

Thank you

The West

My last partner had a coil and still menstruated ten days out of every thirty

We had three kids between the two of us so I had a vasectomy and that was it problem solved.

Obviously this is a solution for a monogamous couple but I always advocate for guys to do what they can if they can. Every little helps.

Everyone reacts differently to any medication. The only way you'll know what works best for you is to actually try it - other women's experiences may nowhere match your own.

There's no way in hell I'd have something implanted, inserted or injected into me just for contraceptive purposes as an alternative to the pill which, for me, already came with a whole host of side effects listed in the not so common part of the side effect section!

I react way too strongly to my own hormones as it is with regular excruciating migraines which were worse when I was on the pill.

My GP was, in this instance, a hypocritical thoughtless bitch - my daughter had to go for a blood pressure check up to get a repeat prescription for the pill - I wasn't looking for the pill but for a migraine remedy and got prescribed the pill (which I didn't want as I told her about previous side effects which she wrongly discounted as impossible) without!!! a blood pressure check.

Get yourself a decent GP with a speciality in female health. Ask for all options available for contraception and the pros and cons while taking your medical history into consideration.

If irritability is the issue during certain times of the month - keep a diary, make yourself aware of those times and give yourself something nice in that time to look forward to to help with irritability. Being more aware has worked wonders for my PMS!!!

Yup everyone is different;

Case of trail and error.

It’s just such an annoyance but the alternative is worse. Well it would he for me anyways.

Anyone remember there were talks and trails about the male contraceptive pill ?

It was before Covid wonder if anything came of that ?

There are male contraceptive pills but they have undesirable side effects. You may say so does the female contraceptive pill and you would be right. But when the female pill was sanctioned we didn't have the rigorous medical trial system that we have now. Indeed if the female contraceptive pill was made now it would likely not be sanctioned due to the side effects. Unfair as that sounds that's the main reason. Also the male pill candidate creates dry orgasm which was thought by the pharma companies to be a problem. Also they were unsure if women would put the risk of their pregnancy at the word of the man that they werent fertile.

It's trial and error, lots of people sing the praises of the coil but it was a nightmare for me and my gynae remarked after that she couldn't tolerate it either.

Hi OP

I have the implant in my arm and I swear by it. I’ve lost count of how many I’ve had at this stage, but never had any issues/side effects and i don’t get a period either.

It lasts 3 years, so not as long as the coil, but still a decent amount of time.

We use the rhythm method in combination with the pull and pray method depending on the stage in her cycle. No accidental pregnancy for nearly 4 years

+1 from me for menstrual cycle awareness and hournalling, great tool for getting to grips with what the body does when and what to do to go with the flow. Even if it does get a bit too woo-woo for me I've found a lot of practical, sensible advice and get good results.

For contraception I've used condoms for 20 years without ever having an unplanned pregnancy (that I know of). I accept that my male partners suffered for it, and it takes discipline. Finally I had one who wouldn't have them so I picked the copper coil because I wanted something reliable but didn't want to take hormonal contraception. I was on the mini pill for a short six months, it flattened my enjoyment of sex and clipped my emotions - sounds a lot like what antidepressants do to some people - and I just didn't find it was worth it while other options were available. I would have taken the Mirena as a second choice, because theoretically the hormones are localised rather than systemic, but women's experiences are mixed. All methods have drawbacks and side effects so it's a personal choice to see what you can best live with. I actually enjoy getting my period, the release of it, I find it a comforting time, maybe a little masochistic lol and surprised when women say never getting one is the best thing!

Bi-salp here. The surgery was pretty uncomfortable for a week or two but nice and reliable now!

No hormone's to meddle with

I swear by the Jaydess coil. I was having serious issues with the pill and also had issues when I tried the Mirena coil. But I haven't looked back since I started using the Jaydess. Have a chat with your GP because there are different options for the coil as well as the pill.

I had to get mine replaced last week & they told me 6 years

OP, someone has mentioned before re Mirena, it DOES take a while to settle. I honestly felt like I was going crazy in the first 6 months after I first got it in but it absolutely did settle and I personally wouldn't steer from it.

Got the snip (bi salp) after 3rd was born - 2.5 years later and delighted. Couldn’t take the pill due to pregnancy liver issues but also had problems prior to my pregnancies so wouldn’t have wanted to go back anyway.

Hope u get sorted x

I got the Mirena for medical reasons. It took my body almost a year to get used to the coil, had on and off spot bleeding. But after that year and ever since, super happy with the coil.

BTW it's only one particular antibiotics that can interfere with the pill, the rifamycin type antibiotics. All the most common antibiotics don't affect your pill contraception.
