Good luck to the parents of anyone waiting on their results tomorrow

Honestly did anyone's leaving cert results actually matter apart from going to college on your chosen subject

Did it get you the career you have or did you go off on a tangent

Myself ....left school in February of my leaving cert year as I got my apprenticeship as an electrician and hated school

Then never worked as an electrician once qualified

I actually really wanted to get into the gardai but at the time the height requirement was still in place so that was me fecked once i realised i wasnt gonna grow the extra 5 inches in a year. I only did the subjects i did to get the required points for my course and i think only business was beneficial.

Major tangent for me. Ended up in a logistics role and so far removed from what I wanted to do after secondary school

The leaving cert in Ireland is the closest thing to a blood sport, the pressure it puts kids under is not ok. My daughter did the leaving during covid and had the benefit of a blended leaving, exams and predicted grades, such a better option. Rant over sorry.

I used my leaving to get to university and used my degree for work for 13 years , until I decided to “choose life” and now I do something that is so far removed from all of that.

When I done my Leaving it was like the Leaving Cert was the be all and end all! I was told it would be the hardest exams I will ever do because of the pressure that comes with it to get a college placement.

Our son is headed in to his Leaving cert year this year, I hope for his sake and confidence he does well but if he doesn't then there are so many routes available now to get to college. If that ends up not being his thing and he wants to work and revisit the idea in a few years then so be it!

Very few know exactly what they want to do leaving school, heck I am kicking the ass of 40 and I still don't know what I want to do!

Left school at 15 and only time I was out of work was covid lockdown. Before that was 2008 but only for a few weeks. I’ve one skill or a so called professional but I don’t use it anymore.

Wanted to be and electrician so my junior cert results would have sufficed but I was only turned 16 in 6th year so stayed and done the leaving cert, all I can remember is taking a half day from work to collect my results. Couldn’t tell you what the results were!

Still working as an electrician in a niche

Didn't get the A level grades I needed for uni the first time around because of a vindictive teacher who fucked up an entire class full of results that year.

The university agreed to keep a place for everyone the following year so we all went back to different schools for another 12 months only for the university to go back on their word but just on the course I was to do. Everyone else got a place.

Starting working full time the following week and my A level results have never been asked for or needed in any job since.

Gods Own Country

I done allright at my "GCSE 'S" " and never went back into 6th form, got a summer job that lasted 3 years.

But in hindsight I probably wish I had of stuck at it, doesn’t eat me up but I'd give any kid my tuppence to persuade them to try harder at school.

Did 4 stints in college, only needed the LC for the first one and rammed the exams in that one. In fairness Letterkenny was mad craic in those days.

I didn't know what I wanted to do when doing the Leaving Cert.

I still don't and I'm totally fine with that.

I didn't do a stroke for my leaving cert and should have got much better. If it wasn't for sports I probably would have left early and done an apprenticeship.(you could in those days!)

A mate convinced me to go to college for a year, for the craic. A different academic environment, I loved it and worked very hard!

Sin é!

Class of '73.

50th. anniversary this year.

Didn't kill myself studying but did reasonably well results wise. Made good friends and enjoyed it for the most part.

Went on to college and an interesting career.

Still learning at the university of life.

Every day is a school day.

Two Rivers

I never done the leaving cert went to college when I was 23 as a mature student and now have numerous advanced degrees (in areas different to what I studied initially).

The leaving cert isn’t the be all and end all it’s made out to be plenty of routes to get to where want to be! I often tell my families teachers in school that it’s not as important as they are making out and I prefer my lots mental health rather than them to feel pressured into doing well in an exam which is meaningless.

I would be in a totally different field now if I had picked my future when I was still a baby…. Was still young and stupid at 23 but had slightly better gauge on what I wanted.

Well done OP, on bringing up this topic.

Good luck to everybody that's getting there results tomorrow & hopefully it's what ye'd expected & more. If it's not, it's far from the end of the world for you.

Your still a good person, with a good leaving cert, bad leaving cert or NO leaving cert.

I'm going to sound like a sad bastard from here on.

I didn't do my leaving cert. Over time, at time's I do wish I did have it. I do go back to start 4th year for 2 or 3 weeks. Left the week of the junior cert results. As I got a job, as I though I'd be doing an apprenticeship, that never happened, over the 3 year's I worked there. It was used against me a few time's, while working there. Worked in a few different places, they didn't work out. Finally got a place that I was going to do an apprenticeship in, worked there for nearly 4 year's. Started an apprenticeship in cabinet making within that period. When to Limerick for the first college part. Within 3 month's of finishing that part. I was sacked(really) from there. Never finished my apprenticeship after that, as my Dr told me that I should try something else. At time's again I do wish I did finish my apprenticeship.

Moving on, me & work, had a serious falling out. It's a love hate relationship between the two of us to this day still.

To get me out of the house, while inbetween job's. I was "working" full time for an uncle on his farm(any other waste of time). I did go to college as a mature student. Haven't worked in anything, was related to it. Did the green cert aswell(another waste of time now). Over the year's I've copped(eventually) on that the so called 9 to 5 job, possibly isn't for me. What is? Still trying to figure that out.

I would be incline to say to the young people of today, try to do the leaving cert or at least do 4th year. As while during the year on work experience you might find something you like or find out that you actually hate something you liked. Don't do the leaving cert, do it, don't go to college or whatever. The leaving cert isn't the be all & end all. That it's implied to be. Also your life could go 100% the way you want it to, if it doesn't, what about.

Right, rant over.

Good luck to everybody tomorrow, whatever the outcome is.

As long as you got your health and are happy that is the main thing.

They need to bring in assessments over the 2 year period prior to students sitting the exams. At least the students have some scores going into exams.

Need more career guidance teachers. Best of luck to everyone waiting on results

Any one I know that makes great money was fucked out of school and the others didn't go to college except for one.... Very unfair system to put your life at 17/18 into a exam

Far far away

Good luck to any family members getting results. I see the LC as a stepping stone. Its not the be all and end all. There are many options to progress outside of the college route. To expect someone at 17/18 to chose a career for the next 50 years is ridiculous.

Im a major advocate of life long learning. This September, even if its something short, night class or online. Embrace something new or fun.. Who knows where it would take you.

I did O Levels and did well. Took 4 languages for A level because I was good at them, but my real passion was for science. I pulled out of 6th form after a month and got a job in a lab as a textile colourist. I stayed in the textile industry until it no longer existed here. I loved the work I did & also did a degree level professional qualification in textile technology & colouration. I used the chemistry I learned at school every day for almost 20 years.

My O levels benefitted me in other ways too, especially when it came to helping my own children. Still having a decent amount of French & German certainly came in handy when they were practicing for their orals. I was always fairly useful with English language and that's a skill that I've used my entire life in so many aspects.

So yeah, I left school with a good broad knowledge across the subjects I studied, and I do think that has held me in good stead throughout my life. In turn, I've always encouraged my own children to do what they can to get decent grades.

Felt like it was the be all and end all for both of us at the time with what our teachers and parents were drilling into us, we did just OK with the leaving cert, went to college, both dropped out and made careers in fields we never imagined we would, now we have a comfortable life, built our own home and have young kids who'll never want for anything. For us everything worked out perfectly and we absolutely took the piss during the final year of secondary school
