The 12th of July parades kick of today, primarily in Northern Irleand but there are a few others dotted around the country.
Anybody going or have been in the past?
It's not something I've ever been to, it's only in recent years I'd like to go for a gawk. Traditionally it always gave of negative vibes. As a young fella in Galway it was always a time of year when the place would be flooded with people from NI, escaping for a few days! |

I agree it has a certain yob element to it. But I certainly wouldn't deem it a representation of the Unionst/Loyalist community in NI.
It's a pity, I do think if controlled properly and the sectarianism removed it could be a huge attraction for NI. However, the chances of that are slim to none in my lifetime!
Also, if there is ever to be a United Ireland it will most likely be a public holiday! |

Agreed.. there are of course plenty of nice unionists.. and i have nothing against celebrating a holiday respectfully and inclusively. It's that yob minority who fuck it up and make the rest look bad. Hate breeds hate. |

I avoid it, I certainly wouldn't go for a 'gawk' as that would be just crazy given my accent. I wouldn't put myself in that situation.
A lot of people enjoy the 12th without any malicious intent, but there will always be some that can't help themselves. Just the same as the republicans.
A lot of people do go away for this week just because they just want to avoid any agro that might happen, regardless of which side of the fence they stand on.Or in cases they have the time off so get away for a few days nothing more than that.
I hope today goes off peacefully for all involved and those that celebrate today have a good day.I just happen to be off work today by chance and I'm happy out at home getting things done here. |

For anybody that cares, the Battle of the Boyne was actually on July 1st, 1690 and was not a decisive battle in the Williamite war!
The decisive battle was a year later at the Battle of Aughrim, outside Ballinasloe, Co.Galway on the 12th of July 1691, where the Jacobites were routed....now, back to talking about riding!! |

My Dad came from a border county and was of a generation when the 12th was far more of a community event than what it is today. speak of shared
Perhaps that was just the nature of it from his part of Ulster. Perhaps it was because of a family tradition; his dad, grandfather and in laws were in lodges as were and are family members. Perhaps there was rose tinted glasses of the good ol days being better than they were. Perhaps it really was a more cross community event back in the day; he often spoke of refreshments offered to parades by RC neighbours on the 12th, a favour returned on Lá Fheíle Phádraig, and dances and events held that were open to all.
Perhaps it was one of the few days when parts of Catholic repressed Ireland could stand up and not be under the thumb of the parish priest preached. Perhaps he saw the good out of it. Not to say that he didn’t see the bad out of them either; he personally never joined or supported any such organisation and had no desire to do so. Or perhaps there were other things that he took from it all but I can only say for sure that he had fond memories of what it was.
One this is certain; it sure as hell is not like that in the current era. |

It’s a hate fest you look at paddy’s day and look at the 12th bonfires with tricolours and Irish politicians on them, you don’t see nationalists or hardline republicans burning union jacks on the 12th. Unionism is dying out slowly but surely in the north thankfully. |

As a migrant from the continent i find all these parades quite archaic and can’t get the point of it. Central Europe had religious war from 1618 till 1648 but No one in Europe in either side of Christianity would get a stiffy from attempting every year to humiliate the other side . There are much different things celebrate or to sort out than some useless slaughter which occurred more than 300 years ago . But then- who am , if that’s what gets them off - some times it’s grand if people publish their narrow mind set, makes it easier to avoid them |

In the main it gets bad press, as the years go on it tends to get ignored by most people.
People have no idea what goes on at most because too often the largest parades and bonfire sites have been vile shows of sectarianism and bigotry. So people don't look much further into it.
Most people in ROI can see its been mainly taken over by the worst kind of people and that they're not representative of their community. |

Some are trying to introduce beacon type fires instead of the enormous bonfires. It makes for a safer and probably friendlier environment. Certainly for younger people.

Sarah here, Personaly I hate the 12th as I find the bonfires offensive as hell. When I was younger I had a friends mum who was an MLA for sin fien. I will never forget her posters going onto a local bonfire and being burnt. And before anyone says what about the 15th of august when the catholics have there ones that’s just as wrong as the 12th

How is it ‘not much different to fans fighting in Croke Park?’ That’s just daft.
It’s an anti-catholic sectarian hate fest, that celebrates a culture by burning tricolours, hanging effigies of elected public representatives amongst many others examples.
This is not kids having a scrap at a football match. |

It's just part of the culture that they like to express it could be likened to the 15th Aug or the 1916 parades that are in the south. Both sides should Bury the past instead of letting it fester that's what caused alot of the problems imo |

It was in reference to a post talking about a video of two bands fighting amongst themselves, and what does that say about them.
Two bands fighting is the same as the two groups of football/hurling fans fighting in Croke Park. You can't look down your nose at one, and not the other! |

How is it in anyway likened to the 15th of august? Let’s see how much anti social behaviour there is from last night and today by comparison to Paddy’s day, you don’t see nationalists burning union jacks or British ni flags or effigies of unionists, just look Michelle O Neill last night on a bonfire. |

There seems to be confusion in this thread between the commemoration of Internment which is 9th August and 15th which is a religious feast day. |

I've worked in a staunchly Loyalist part of Belfast where most of my staff were in various Lodges and the business was across the road from the bonfire site.
I'm a Catholic and I grew up in a Nationalist area and I didn't feel threatened or intimidated once during my time working there. There was good natured banter but nothing more.
I've worked all over NI on the Twelfth and had issues with traffic and road closures and a few dodgy moments with individuals but that wasn't restricted to Orange parades.
I've had just as many issues with Republican Parades and even INF and AOH events where drink was in and wits out.
We are too quick in this country to tar everyone with the same brush.
I'm speaking as someone who has had a gun put to my head on numerous occasions by Republican thugs, Loyalist thugs and Paratrooper thugs so I know intimidation when I see it. |

I've always said that if ireland is ever reunified that the 12th should be set as the reunification day. That way everyone would be celebrating on the 12th the unionists can celebrate their cultural and everyone else cam celebrate reunification. Its a win win and no has to miss out on a party |

Probably a mixture of drugs and alcohol, but not much different to fans fighting in Croke Park the last few weekends. One Kilkenny girl caught in the middle getting split open!"
Wait? Not much different to that? Are you fucking serious?
Clearly for some it's a cultural thing. For many many others it's am annual excuse to show how much you hate themmuns. Posters of various politicians and community leaders being burned, as well as the Irish flag, doesn't hint much at culture to me. KAT signs don't exactly speak of culture either.
There's a place for all cultures in a united Ireland but the OO are going to have to start taking responsibility for the annual hate fest that the 11th night in particular has become, and lead people away from hatred. Maybe then we can all join in the celebration. |

The biggest joke of all here is people who speak of "reunification", something that will be nigh on impossible considering the majority of unionists want to stay within the UK, they wouldn't be called unionists otherwise now would they..as for parades it's a carnival atmosphere mostly in good spirit ,let them at it I say ..we have peace on this island and long may it last |

There’s a slight nationalist majorly now in the north and there is a guarantee of a vote at some stage as part of the Good Friday agreement. If the British borders are takin down with hopefully a successful vote when it comes they’ll have to accept it one way or another. |

Maybe try viewing these things from other peoples perspective, Mick?
Two bands from the OO having a scuffle makes them horrible people, apparently.
I wonder what they think when they see a girl running out of Hill 16 with blood on her face and lads boxing all around her?
Both their to celebrate their culture. Neither, of course, are representative of their wider communities. |

It's nothing to do with perspective at all.
As I stated above, I have no problem with people celebrating their history, and indeed I'd happily welcome it.
The problem is not what is being celebrated, it's how is being celebrated and the OO needs to get it's act together in relation to some of the nonsense that some bands get up to.
Also, the OO is an organisation that forbids catholics from joining and also forbids it's members from marrying a catholic or allowing their children to be raised a catholics. It doesn't bother me that much as I'm an atheist but it's a sectarian organisation.
Now, as far as I know, it suggests it's members should not speak ill of their catholic neighbours yet it fails to speak out against stuff that goes on mostly on the 11th night but also at some of the parades, for example, playing deliberately provocative tunes outside churches or holding 5 fingers up outside the betting shop where five catholics were shot dead by an RUC member.
Comparing anything connected with any of that to anything related to a match in Croke Park is foolish to say the least. |

You're perfectly entitled to your opinion.
I suspect that in March 1916 you'd have found plenty of people to agree that in 50 years time Dublin would still be in the British empire. |

I’m originally from a nationalist background in the north and I’d effectively put myself in house arrest for 48 hrs over the 11th/12th. Had to work in the city centre a few times and it was not a pleasant experience passing the parades
However being down south, today was like any other day and I barely noticed it was the 12th. It was a breath of fresh air |

I actually agree with a lot of what you say Mick. What I've encountered personally, specifically with regard to trying to have a local bonfire re-sited or at least restricted in size, is that the OO will say that they have no say over the bonfires, & that they do not build them. And to a larger extent this is the case. Of course they're ignoring that they could use their influence to help the community.
It's the same with the bands. They're almost entirely independent of OO lodges and they're paid for their services on the day by the OO. Personally I think it would send a strong message if the OO did not hire in future any band involved in poor behaviour.
I will say though that there are hundreds of bands who take part in the 12th parades - part flute, accordion, silver, pipe bands - who do so without any trouble. I include my own band in that, which is made up of members from both sides of the community and who also take part in St Patrick's Day parades. And we aren't unique in that.

I include my own band in that, which is made up of members from both sides of the community and who also take part in St Patrick's Day parades. And we aren't unique in that.
"
Yes, that makes sense. It's a small number that cause all the trouble. It should be easy enough to deal with.
At SF commemorations/parades, bands who have played at dissedent parades, or had caused any trouble are not allowed.
I don't think the OO have done themselves any favours by trying to reignite the Drumcree situation again either.
I've said it before and I'll say it again, The Sash is a banger.

"The biggest joke of all here is people who speak of "reunification", something that will be nigh on impossible considering the majority of unionists want to stay within the UK, they wouldn't be called unionists otherwise now would they..as for parades it's a carnival atmosphere mostly in good spirit ,let them at it I say ..we have peace on this island and long may it last
There’s a slight nationalist majorly now in the north and there is a guarantee of a vote at some stage as part of the Good Friday agreement. If the British borders are takin down with hopefully a successful vote when it comes they’ll have to accept it one way or another. "
Doesn't that sound great and our unionist neighbours in the north will just accept that peacefully and carry on as normal, a pipe dream if ever I've heard it ,the north would very quickly descend into violence and nobody wants that |

Call it a pipe dream but it’s part of the agreement if you like it or not. Give it 10 years there will be a border poll. If they then can’t accept the will of the people if it was to be successful, it would speak for itself in what your dealing with really |

"As a migrant from the continent i find all these parades quite archaic and can’t get the point of it. Central Europe had religious war from 1618 till 1648 but No one in Europe in either side of Christianity would get a stiffy from attempting every year to humiliate the other side . There are much different things celebrate or to sort out than some useless slaughter which occurred more than 300 years ago . But then- who am , if that’s what gets them off - some times it’s grand if people publish their narrow mind set, makes it easier to avoid them "
Religion is only the dressing on sectarianism in the North. As for the rest of Europe... Well I live in Spain and every town and village near me has their own 4/5 day long celibration called Moros y Christianos and I find the parallel chilling. Lots of marching, drinking, pointy hats, that celibrate the defeat of one group by another.

"How is it ‘not much different to fans fighting in Croke Park?’ That’s just daft.
It’s an anti-catholic sectarian hate fest, that celebrates a culture by burning tricolours, hanging effigies of elected public representatives amongst many others examples.
This is not kids having a scrap at a football match.
Ah go way outa dat ... fuckin guns ... soft boys them lads
Few slaphs of a hurl on your shins just for sport .... and thats from your own coach ... few 3lbows in da face before your sent on for the last 15 mins ...
And ham sandwiches that are so dry they come back out .... still in triangles .

It's seasoned beef - like a cross between minced beef and beef sausage meat - with a whiff of onion and leek. It's made into a large sausage shape and sold in slices. When it's cooked it almost always gets a raised bump in the centre |
