I posted a similar thread last time I was here, just looking for some fresh opinions especially after the few years we have had. In my opinion there really is not enough being done for mental health in Ireland.

Firstly I am not encouraging people not to take prescribed medication. I am just sharing my experience.

Having suffered with depression and anxiety attacks for years I finally sought help. The only option I was given was pills. At the same time a friend suggested meditation. Long story short, meditation, exercise, healthier diet no pills and I havnt had an attack in about 13years.

What are your opinions?

My thoughts are that one size doesn't fit all. Sometimes medication might be needed to quiet the chatter in their head enough to let them see the other ways through.

From my own experience, the problem is often being prescribed medication to help initially but then the situation is never reassessed and you find yourself 3, 5, 10, 40 years down the line still medicated with no other avenues ever being investigated

Just based on my own experiences medication and CBT did absolutely nothing for me.

Over the years I've tried mediation and mindfulness even with the help of friends who do both as part of their jobs and again it did nothing at all.

The only thing that has ever worked for me was accepting that talking everything out over and over again was just digging a deeper hole so rather than day I was going to do something I actually went and did something.

That something was hillwalking and exploring the outdoors.

I haven't looked back since.

That's not advice btw because everyone is different. It's just what worked for me.

I've been on antidepressants. I've seen people close to me on antidepressants.

My personal experience is not a good one, neither was my ex's but I believe that is because the root of the problem wasn't addressed and this is more often than not the case.

Western medicine treats the symptoms.

I personally prefer a more holistic approach myself now. I'm delighted you found what works for you, OP

Life is a rollercoaster we aren't suppose to be happy all the time,so when I'm down I like to go for walks in nature or go to neolithic tombs brings me to another time away from the hectic modern society that's my experience anyway.

Hillwalking is a meditation in itself. If it gets you into the zone, and stops the chatter in your head, its great. I find it very hard to sit still and have an emoty mind. For me also, walking long distance relaxes me so much.

Mindfulness is useful for mild mental health problems and its lack of side effects is very welcome there. If you can’t get out of bed or you’re dehydrated because you ve completely lost your appetite you re unlikely to meditate your way out of this scenario . It’s not either or, it’s horses for courses
