So anybody, putting the feet up watching a Prince becoming a King on TV, today?

With Drink in hand, to toast the New King, at the end of it.

Different country, different customs, wouldn't be happy with that whole family and would hate to have to contribute towards the cost of them.

Having said that some of them seem nice but why would you accept some bloke who was randomly born into a family as your king

Watched 5 mins as they were going in and thought it was totally stupid looking with their costumes but thats was the public seem to like in The UK

No interest in watching it or really the fact it is happening.

But plenty of people have been looking forward to it and having parties to celebrate etc so I hope they enjoy the day when it means something to them.

I don't see the need for negativity if it's not something you are interested in.

Fintan O'Toole did a very good analysis of the royal family in today's Irish Times: historical context; relevance; skilled use of the media and its decline in real terms in a very different society than when the last coronation took place 70 years ago.

I passed through the Royal village of Hillsborough today which was preparing to celebrate coronation day; it held no relevance for me whatsoever.

For a very significant % of the Irish populace the British Royal family has no relevance, because they are members of a republic; but in Northern Ireland a lot of people do strongly identify with them.

I personally find it a bit bizarre, but that is the culture and monarchy to whom they show allegiance.

They are deeply affronted by any criticism of this historical anachronism.

I did not watch their coronation on tv, but there was a public screen in Royal Hillsborough and the green was laid out like many other British village greens, akin to a party atmosphere for a public celebration.

Fintan O'Toole's central point was that when an institution is a hollow sham, that has wealth but no real power, the pomp, regalia and pageantry are there to disguise this flawed facade of modern relevance in a world that has very largely rejected the concept of monarchy.

I respect British peoples' love of monarchy but I do not identify with it in any way.

Camilla Parker-Bowles was Charles's bit on the side who has now moved centre stage to become Queen.

The next king of England is not her son!

"Democratically elected" is debatable.

The first past the post voting system usually allows for clarity but it's not representative in the way pr is.

Back in 2017 when Teresa May called a snap general election, The Conservative party increased their vote from just under 37% to just over 42% and lost 13 seats in the process. Boris Johnson then subsequently lost 1% of that vote but gained 48 seats. Mad stuff!

'Democratically elected'...

...the Brits still have a class system in place and it's the upper class that is running the country (most politicans have a very privileged background), the middle class is shrinking away and the Working class barely makes a living, having to turn to food banks to survive.

In the meantime C&C having their coronation party paid by the people, 100 million plus...

It's like Dickens is rewiriting his famous novels.

And yes we've managed to do it too. That's because we vote for the same idiots over and over and those idiots just copy what the UK or the US is doing and keep their gravy train going.

Imagine an irish government looking at other European countries and how the shop is run there ie. Finland and take a nod from there.

So long as the Irish people keep voting the way they do, nothing will change. In a democracy, you get the government you deserve.

Yup, it's also a lack of choice, unfortunately the political Irish landscape is rather bleak, with FF and FG being the same and no established left party.

It has yet to be seen in which direction SF is sailing if/when in power, they've strong ties to the US and I doubt they tidy up the church's involvement in running this country.

JASUS, I wasn't expecting such a big amount of replies in this thread.

Personally I didn't watch it, nor would I have watched it, if I lived in the UK, all of my life. Politics, Royal family activities, doesn't interest me enough to sit in & watch it/them on TV.

Each to they're own & hopefully ye enjoyed it .

I said on & off for year's, the best thing to do was to put FF & FG, into government together. By doing that we should see the difference between them & also get the best out of both parties. Personally I can't see or enough of a difference between the 2 parties in anyway. The Country is no better off, with the 2 of them in, compared to if only 1 of them was in with other's aswell.

Ya, it'll be interesting to see how SF get in government, when that happens, are they all talk & do the thing's, they say they'll do or not. They would have got in the last time, IF they ran enough candidate's in that election.

Either way time will tell.

Well I thought it was absolutely magnificent. The music alone was exquisite, and a huge 'well done' to the Methody girls who were part of the choir. The parade was on point and, whatever your viewpoint on it, to do what they did (the whole parade marching to a single beat, when that parade is a mile long from front to back) is incredibly difficult.

I found it fascinating to watch, from start to finish.

And I should definitely point out that this is K & not E replying

Her title since the coronation is Queen Camilla (the invitations were worded as such too) but this has no impact on the line of succession.

No spouse of a British female monarch can be called King. It was the same for Queen Victoria & Prince Albert. The title of the monarch's spouse is awarded by the monarch themselves and Queen Elizabeth awarded her husband the title of Prince

I'd say the opposite, no? The male spouse of a queen would never be "higher" than her. And the line of succession is by blood, not marriage
