Inspired by the lounge

Recently I have discovered big river by Jimmy nail

The premise isn’t exciting . Actor and part time singer sings about growing up in Newcastle. But with mark knopfler on the guitar and lyrics discussing parenting , politics , masculinity and tradition it’s actually a stunning song . A sincere love letter to his hometown …,

Rob Stuart's "Grace" the first few times I heard it, was like that for me. Aswell as Finbar fury's "Green fields of France".

Somewhere

Everlong by the Foo Fighters.

They opened Slane with it and after a great day of sunshine for the support acts, some clouds darkened the sky just before they came on and the stage lights lit up the rain, the band ran onto the stage with Dave Grohl out on the walkway getting rained on too.

Everything just clicked in that moment.

Got goosebumps just thinking about it now lol

Yes live versions are interesting

Songs which haven’t had that effect on me as studio versions did live such as stand by you (Chrissie Hynde live is incredible), and True love waits (Radiohead)

Dunboyne

When in the Mean Fiddler in London on a Sunday morning and The Lonesome Boatman was played by a band I think called Shanty Dam, that prickled my spine.

Pearl Jam - Black from the MTV Unplugged, especially when Eddie sings "I know someday you'll be a beautiful star, in somebody else's sky but Why? Why can't it be mine" that's epic.

Then many tunes when Glen Hansard gets raw and loud, it's heart trembling live.

As for Eddie and Glen together? No better thing, I think

Dunboyne

Also a plus one for Luke Kelly Raglan Road.

Along with Christy Moore - Back Home in Derry, Sinead O'Connor - pretty much any time she opens her mouth, The Frames - live as it's an out of body experience. I may add more

That reminds me of watching the video to REM’s all the way to Reno directed by Michael Moore in a school . The lyrics directed at the students ‘ You know what you are, You're gonna be a star’ are just mesmerising
