Survival instinct (resilience)
Scandinavian-made knife
Long-life fishing line and selection of hooks.
Based on presumption that fresh water and very basic food would be available.
If you have ever been in a survival scenario, fresh potable and uncontaminated water assumes a priority that most people have no comprehension of, and will grossly underestimate, until faced with its unavailability!

I have it on good authority that the Burkes are effectively a cult and do not tolerate outsiders.
Seriously, they would survive but others would not; after a very short time the outsider would decide to paddle their own canoe; they (all of them) are a normal person's worst nightmare: arrogant, entitled, very dogmatic, inflexible, intransigent, condescending narcissistic insulting, erratic and with a world-view that is light years behind almost everyone else!
The children are trained and manipulated proxies for the cult's leader, Martina the matriarch.
