Well, f**k me pink! 48.60 for the cinema for 1 adult and 2 children with 1 popcorn and 1 slushie .
I remember the days where one ticket was a couple of quid
At least I got one over on the introduction of card only parking payment. Neither of my cards would work so they had to let me out for free
What do you remember costing a fraction of how much it is in this day and age? |

I remember being in the States in 1998 and petrol was 95 cents for a gallon. It jumped to just over a dollar and there was a massive outcry all over the media and protests at garages. Within a week it was back below a dollar.
Went back 2 years later and it was $1.40 which was still ridiculous in comparison to what we were paying here at the time. |

"A dirty weekend in the 80's
Less that 50 quid per couple
Return rail fare from Dublin to Wexford
2 nights bed and breakfast and one evening meal in the Talbot Hotel
"
My dirty weekends in the 80s cost nothing - muck was free |

Cinema ticket prices are gone crazy, do not buy any food in there either, have them with you if possible , the same stuff can be bought way cheaper outside , it's bad enough having to pay the prices for the cinema ticket other than also being screwed for food in there...l completely understand it's not always the case and sometimes a cinema treat is a cinema treat...but there's no doubt about it ..the cost of going is gone out of control. |

I availed of that offer a couple of times.
Also the B&I Ferry offer of £29 for the ferry to Holyhead, bus into Liverpool and a night's B&B in a swanky hotel. |

1984 and a pack of 18 cigs was £1 in a vending machine. No pound coin mechs at that time so it had to be 2x50ps.
By 1992 that had jumped to £2.70 for packs of 16,17 or 18s.
Circuit boards in some machines had a max price setting of £7.90.
Just looked in the shop this morning and some brands are £13 and £14.
Loose tobacco used to be £5 for 50g and is now £25.
I'm glad I've never smoked.

And now we should ask our grandparents what they spent on fuel, alcohol, cigarettes, chocolate for comparison...
what would interest me most is does the average income equate to the cost of things now to 10 years ago, to 20 years ago, 30 years ago etc... |

My first house cost me 3 times my yearly salary in 1991
Thats the bit that blows me away that houses were affordable

Disneyland and Disney World were built specifically for the average working American family to visit.
The average American hasn't been able to afford to visit for at least 20 years because of the discrepancy in ticket prices and wages. |

We were at Disneyland Paris 2 weeks ago. Costed about 3.5k all in. Didn't even bring all the kids.
No reason to lower the price if there are mugs like me willing to pay. |

Exactly, I agree, but it's a completely different market now from 30 or 40 years ago. |

€3 for a coffee in a garage, more expensive per litre than petrol or diesel. 80c for a coffee in Portugal. More money made in teas and coffee is garages than from fuel. I think the average station coffee machine turns over 200k plus. Absolute madness and profiteering |

More fool those supporting them - could go towards the down payment of your house while you make your instant at home and put it in the flask for the road. Better still, tap water in the bottle |

Bought a €3,000 projector about 10yrs ago and it's got about 4,000hrs on it.
Now amp, 120in projector screen and speakers cost around another €4,000.
So let's say €8k all in.
Average movie is 2hrs long so approximate guesstimate is 2,000 movies but knock that down to 1,500 for the sake of gaming and other stuff.
Currently a cinema ticket, for 1 person, in Odeon Blanchardstown for the Pope's Exorcist is €11.50. So to see 1,500 movies in my local cinema would be €17,250. That's not to mention the reduced price of snacks at home, the ability to pause movie when you need a pee break and the fact it's usually 2-6 people watching the movie. Do the resulting maths yourselves.
If I had a word of advice to give, invest in home cinema folks
Oh! Beer. My ingredients arrived today for 160pts of beer at a cost of just less than €100. Yes there are initial costs for equipment of about the same again but you have them forever so add say 10%, for this batch but it's really much less, so €110 for this batch. So 69c a pint! For interesting beers I actually want to drink, other than the shite flowing from the majority of taps in Irish pubs.
Kind of a no brainer, don't you think?
Follow me for further cost savings (I jest )
We're being ripped off and until more people do as I do and refrain from paying the ridiculous prices, it will continue |

The general principle is that if it is a product that you must have, for example energy, the price inflation will be high, but anything that involves an 'addiction' cigarettes, alcohol or an interest such as sport or concerts by famous artistes, the promoters can charge what they want because know fanatics will pay to view.
The key is to minimise your demand for anything that can be exploited, where possible. |

"What about communion and confirmation money
Wedding presents....usually money
Whats the going rate now "
Last wedding I went to I gifted €200 (as a singleton). But it would very much depend on how well I know the person. That was my sister so I felt generous.
Communion/confirmation again depends on how well I know them - a godchild gets €50, niece or nephew €30, anyone else €20.
