So I travel 100km to work each way, twice a week. At one stage was doing it 6 days in a row for shift work, some mornings I'd get home and wonder how I got there.
This morning had only left the house 5 mins and my life literally flashed before my eyes
Obviously the other driver was late for work and he fairly mounted the kerb to avoid my car but honestly i thought was dead.
Has really put things perspective this morning so to the lot of ye I like big hugs from me and the ones u don't like well ye can fuck right off.

Been there myself. Used to leave cork at 6am to be in waterford city for 8am, one morning I had a micro sleep behind the wheel. Lucky enough no one comming the other way, pulled over took 15mins to pull myself together , got into work and handed my notice in , not worth the risk .
Glad your OK |

Take your time and make sure you have recovered from the shock, that is a terrible thing to have gone through. Once the adrenaline wears off completely you will be drained.
Best wishes. |

I hated reading this because I had a similar story from 10 years ago. I was driving back to college on a Sunday night, middle of winter. I wasn't speeding or anything, but hit a bad patch of black ice and lost control of the car. The car spun across the other lane and was a split second from being totally smashed from an oncoming car. I ended up in a ditch on the far side of the road and like yourself, had just experience the whole life flashing before your eyes thing. Still remember the glare of the oncoming headlights.
A family who were arriving home to a nearby house spotted what happened and took me in for a while for hot drinks and food to try and help me calm down and come around a bit.
But for weeks afterwards I couldn't sleep, it absolutely haunted me. I'd just keep getting constant flashbacks. I was under pressure as I was coming to the very end of a 4-year course and honestly thought I was failing getting my degree at the final hurdle. On top of it, I'd just had a bereavement of someone very close to me, it just felt like an accumulation of everything shitty on top of me all at once. I stumbled through and picked up my qualification a few weeks later, thankfully.
Anyways, that was a ramble. Massive hugs DD, it can be an awful experience... |

I used to drive between 1000-1500 every single week just in NI without ever crossing the border and despite seeing lots of close calls, there were only a handful I was actually involved in.
The weirdest was in the middle of a town when sitting at traffic lights.
A car came through the green light at about 30 miles an hour and the driver blacked out, hit the kerb and bounced back and forth between the kerb and the row of cars in front of me. He wrecked 8 vehicles before eventually stopping with his front wing driven through the drivers door of the car in front of me.
The drivers of all the damaged vehicles had to climb out their passenger doors.
The man's wife and daughter were in the car with him and they said he suffered from epilepsy and had just got his licence back after a year out.
They were the only ones injured but his daughter said she would never get back in a car ever again. |

Was doing the same. Driving over a 100km to work and 100km home on a daily basis. And I was working nights. One morning I fell asleep behind the wheel on the M4. I ended up in the ditch but thankfully no other cars were involved. I quit the job that day and got something much more local. |

Did 1200-1500km per week for over 30 years with 5 or 6 smashes including rollovers and write-off's. Probably 100's of near misses.
Thankfully no serious injuries to me or others.
Driving is a dangerous pursuit and on the law of averages the more you drive the more likely you are to have a mishap.
Stay safe. ![](/icons/s/biggrin.gif) |

I don't think other people should suffer because you are tired, start drinking coffee and you won't doze off at the wheel, can't help but feel for that responsible guy who had to mount a kerb to avoid you probably damaging his car in the process, maybe get the bus in future, I put myself in his shoes and i would be very annoyed and would want to give you a right kicking, a bollocking at least if I was controlled |

I wasn't tired, the point I made up until last year I was driving 1200km over 6 days and not once had I a close one.
Yesterday morning I was completely awake, in the right. The other driver was speeding through a village coming around a slight corner and had to swerve to miss me.
I'm a long time driving with a clean history.
And plenty of people work shifts and drive home and wonder how they make home but need the job to survive. |

Fair enough you picked it up wrong , And to be fair You are right to think about other drivers in terms of drivers falling asleep. However this wasn't the case and it would be nice if you apologized for picking it up wrong. |

Used to drive 2hrs into Dublin and back 2hrs daily. Had to go through city centre, dropoff and continue to southside to my work, then return in evening doing pickup and home
Long straight country road on way back I used to nod off due to boredom and time driving (I love driving but has to be interesting)
I never crashed luckily but had a close call once where I understand your life flashing before you. Swore I'd never be in that situation again. Now I drive to nearest train station, pay the money and don't worry about falling asleep at the seat. Not likely to be an option where you are so start thinking about moving jobs. I did and found ones that suits safer travel.
Hopefully you can do similar ![](/icons/thumb_up.png) |

Came off shift work last year so no more worries about falling asleep or nodding off.

I'd be 2 hours late, would have a 30 min wait to change bus, get to work for about 2 hours and have to leave again to get bus home with another 30 min wait lol |
