Report on St John Ambulance abuse

Geoffrey Shannon's report on child abuse at St John Ambulance organisation in Ireland was published on 16 March.
It contained steretypical examples of grooming and abuse stretching back over many decades that were not addressed, despite being common knowledge within.
One crucial fact was truly shocking: the organisation had a child protection policy that was founded on the premise that if they kept Gays out that would prevent child abuse from taking place in the units throughout Ireland.
More stunning was the fact that Tusla in 2019 gave Saint John's Ambulance a completely clean bill of health.
Geoffrey Shannon SC is a highly respected barrister who has been earmarked to become a Circuit Court Judge in the near future.
His scathing report does not pull any punches. There have been calls for the entire board of the directors to stand down. |

There's stuff not printed thats widely know that wont come out till any court cases if they ever get to court
I was a member right through those years,some of those in the report are friends and they've been treated very badly by SJAB right throughout this process apart from the cover up of the abuser

It is appalling no doubt about that it's the dark side of humanity that no one wants to confront and accept for what it is, most people would sooner ignore it as a result it gets swept under the rug and cover ups are the result |

This is tragic. Child sex abusers exist in all large organisations, but management who choose not to alert the authorities and who have responsibility for the response (or lack of) are responsible for the repeated abuse and need to be held to account also.
Thats not a normal response. Most right minded people would be onto the guards immediately. There is no excusing it. |

There was one member who was very well known within the organisation for abusing young men. The higher ups turned a blind eye to it for years and all complaints fell on deaf ears. Some of his victims are still going through the trauma he inflicted on them years ago with one becoming homeless over it. |

I don't think most people would prefer to ignore it or swept under the carpet. It's more that those powers that turned a blind eye are still in place and it's a much wider circle of involvement than we probably can imagine. They still have no interest whatsoever that the full thruth comes to light.
Why do you think the Tuam babies are still buried in a septic tank up to this day? |

I would have thought the logistics of exhuming 800 baby skeletons from a septic tank would be rather off putting, I think most people would rather let sleeping dogs ly than go through that even if it meant giving every baby a Christian burial |

I think a lot of the families feel orher wise especially the ones that don't know where their siblings are. I recently read the mother and baby home book and as a single parent who had a child in 94 I'm so glad I had my family's support |

Perhaps the Catholic order who put those dead babies unceremoniously in that hole (as they were born of sin) should be the ones who should do that tricky "off putting" job.
I won't gold my breath. They didn't even bother paying the abuse reparations they owe to child abuse victims today.

Tusla's "clean bill of health" is going to really explode within the next few days; Oireachtas is now very interested with a full hearing planned.
The former head of Tusla is now the new head of HSE, so some interesting revelations are expected. |

Its already been reported that TUSLA asked for a letter of comfort to state that SJAB was compliant with child safety protection guidelines
So thats what they got and they'll say they depended on it to be true

I do not think this issue is going to go away; the committee will probably have to disband and a new organisation be formed to take over their role.
Shannon's report was very damning of what happened for decades, especially in the Kilmainham area, that no longer exists as a SJAB district.
I hope the fullname of the aged abuser is revealed! |

So that his other criminal activities will be exposed and other victims will be enticed to come forward; the more these guys are exposed, the safer Irish society becomes for every one.
I am of course assuming that he is still alive; none of the papers said that he is now deceased. |
