It’s a bloody disgrace that parents of kids with special needs have too fight for a school for their kids
When you think of all the money that this and other governments have squandered down the years
All these people want is a right that is supposed to be available to all kids and it’s country wide not just in koble
And with James winning an Oscar and ya I know not all kids with special needs can go on too achieve this but the basic right is at very least is a deserved right |

If you knew some of the sh*t that goes on based on interpersonal relationships/feuds between the department and principals, that has directly had an impact on not opening units/classrooms in mainstream schools funded for by the department for neuro diverse children until questioned by parents who dig deeper, you'd be spewing fire.
Believe me, I seethe, thinking about the department of education and how our government has been failing our most vulnerable, continually, for years, decades even. |

As the parent of a child with a disability, I do like the word, my ex and I started fighting for him the day he was born when a dr started telling us what was best for him.
We were lucky that we live in an area with a very strong charity branch which provides Speech Therapy, OT, support and sporting activities
To deal with the dept of education was ok, in that there was plenty of money at the time for snas and some additional support.
It was the attitude of some teachers towards him, how dare you have him in my class, was worse and then being told that he would bring down the overall results for the school if he was accepted into 3 particular schools.
We were exceptionally lucky that we met a vice principal who cared about the children who went through the doors of a particular school and with the help of a brilliant SNA and Teachers, he did a leaving cert.
Today he attends an IT and works, it’s a battle that never stops, not until that last breath

Only getting started with this particular battle. We are lucky she has been given an extension for a pre school year but as of right now she has had zero therapies and one assessment for OT which i had to bring her to cork for. She still has no formal diagnosis and places are extremely limited for where she can attend owing to the fact she will not be able for a mainstream school so we could very well be looking at home schooling |

You have a constitutional right to an assessment of need to be carried out within 3 months of application with the HSE, and for this assessment to be completed within another 3 months.
Though you possibly already know this.

Unfortunately rights for children/adults wit a disability is not something the state holds in any regard
IMO parents are on their own and it is those who can fight the hardest and longest win
Just think about The Grace Case and Kerry CAMHS just to list 2
What is really unfortunate are the families who drop between the stools and are told the children are “borderline” |

Borderline that’s just an excuse to say we have no room or the resources for what your child needs in my opinion
This is just not acceptable in this day and age I know I’m not wrong and we certainly won’t stay quiet on this
We also know this is a swing site but if a football thread gets a lot of attention well so should this if not more

8 years ago i went through the assessment of needs process with my second son. Got assessed in a timely process via AON process, and get his ASD diagnosis. Spoke to our SENO and got a local unit place no issue.
Last year my 4th child also needs assessment. Wait for ages for AON with little response. Give up and pay for a private assessment (€1600) diagnosed ASD. Call the SENO. No response. Call again. No response. Call daily for weeks. No response. In the end we got lucky because the headmistress of our local primary knocked on our door and told us they were opening a new unit this year and asked us to apply. We now have a place.

Since Noonan became minister for health, imo, the whole process changed to we challenge everything and our children became nothing more than hinderences
In 15 years, my son was never called to a hse speech and language, ot or any other assessment that he was entitled to.
I’m fully aware my next comment may not be well received but with o’gormon as minister, it seems to be getting worse, just be trans something and you’ll be fine |

I live down the road from it here in Portlaoise
It’s unbelievable how run down it has got,
In past 5 to 7 years they have built I’d say 4 to 5 new schools here in portloaise and that has just been left neglected you’d think they’d push in the funding for it , the staff are the best in the world in there and they just get in with it |
