I had an appointment with a sexual health clinic yesterday and I got a prescription for PrEP.

https://www.sexualwellbeing.ie/sexual-health/prep/

Just posting here because I was l lead to believe it was a far more difficult process than it actually is.

It was very straightforward. I made an appointment about a month beforehand. I had my results from my latest tests with SH24. They can do the tests there if you don't use that service either though.

A consultation with the PrEP clinician, a blood test with the doctor and I'm out the door in 45 mins with a prescription for 3 months worth of the drug.

It's free if you are a medical cardholder too.

You can take it every day or use it as an event based thing, say for going to sex parties etc.

I have no intention of doing bareback but as condoms can slip off or tear just want it as an extra layer of protection.

Anyway just thought I'd share my experience of getting it...

"Is it expensive for those that don't have a medical card "

A google(so may not be 100% accurate) says 80 to 90 euro for generic brand 30pills

Worth every penny IMO. Saves a lifetime of other drugs, tests, and possible counselling.

You can get a Drug Payment Scheme card without a means test and your prescription spending is capped at €80 a month

I find it strange when I see a status saying ‘on prep and ready for raw fun’.

What about non HIV STIs?

It only protects against HIV. That's a big one to be protected against though.

Imo anyone doing bareback with multiple partners should be on it.

A round of antibiotics isn't going to cure you from HIV unlike the other STI's

Wouldn't be for us, but I would respect the right of others to male this decision for themselves.

Yes, prescription medication capped at €80 per month per family. So a couple could get all for medication plus any childrens meds too €80 per month.

Being on prep doesn't give you carthe blanche to fuck around with no condoms, I'd be staying clear of someone like that

Not every other STI is cured with a round of antibiotics. HPV can give you cancer. Herpes just doesn't go away once you get it. gonorrhoea has developed resistance to antibiotics, and there have also been cases of antibiotics resistance in both chlamydia and syphilis.

To each their own, but I'd never get close to someone that is happy to put the condom aside just because they're on prep.

This is very helpful and useful health information. There are many dimensions to sexual health care and promoting awareness is very important. The threads about STI testing are also useful and important too. It is good to hear news that access is straightforward and easy for anyone who might need it. Thank you for posting OP.

I agree. I'd also be steering clear of someone like that. Which is why I'm going to be using it with condoms.
