Indecision about Dublin drones

Newry Down

In an identical scenario to that which obtained at Gatwick and other airports in England and elsewhere, Dublin Airpirt is now the latest targets for drones whose owners do not seem to appreciate the extreme danger that a drone poses to modern jet aircraft; either through engine injestion or impact on the cockpit windows.

The technology to disable these craft is simple and relatively cheap; a signal is broadcast from within the airfield that severely interferes with droneradio frequencies, causing them to crash to the ground, in most circumstances without causing any harm.

This issue needs to be cut short and rapidly; waiting for the enactment of an act to prohibit drones and prosecute the offenders is too slow and ineffectual.

Eamonn Ryan is bringing a Memo to cabinet on Tuesday, everything is under control.

Michael o Leary was at his abrasive best on Morning Ireland this morning on this subject, E Ryan got a roasting, RTE did all but apologies later in the program

Agree but I think it’s within a five mile radius of any airport so probably too hard to police

But there is a devise that would bring them down by signal and supposedly they don’t cost the earth

The DAA have the technology in place, Ryan was too busy watering his lettuce plants to bring forward the legislation

It was about 2 in the morning . I was scared as fuck it hovered over me only a 100 ft in the sky . I could see it clear as anything

My heart doesn't exactly bleed for Michael O'Leary losing a few quid because a few planes have to divert. This kind of intervention is exactly why I avoid Ryanair where possible.

That said, it's stupidly dangerous and irresponsible to muck about with drones near and airport, and also unfair on responsible drone owners, who get tarred with the same brush. So, yes, legislation needs to be brought forward quickly to permit defences, but due and careful process does actually need to be followed. (Mind you, it must be breaking Eamonn Ryan's heart to facilitate aviation, but as he's definitely one of the more pragmatic Greens I wouldn't grumble too much about him. The alternatives might be far worse!)
