Man Bites Dog
A black and white Belgian comedy. Very funny. Very twisted. Very dark. It tests your limits of taste…
It’s a spoof documentary about a serial killer. And you’ll never forget scenes from it. Some you wish you’d never seen. Approach with caution. But it is very very funny and the main character, the killer, is actually likeable… to a point… |

"Jean de Florette" and the (sequel/part 2) "Manon des Sources" 1986 French. So beautiful.
Cinema Paradiso... xxx
And recently I watched in a couple of sittings (over 3 hours) the Mammy of Euro Cinema. Lá Dolce Vita. Its stunning.
The scene in which Anita Ekberg takes a midnight dip in the Trevi Fountain is the moment we are all familiar with but 2 mins before it she is wandering around the streets with a tiny white kitten on her head. Holy crap it's beautiful. |

"Amelie - discovered the soundtrack first when I used to babysit a wee down syndrome child who absolutely adored it, has never lost its appeal. "
One of my all time fav movies, had the pleasure of bumping into Audrey at an airport in France |

I loved Mesrine when it came out but I went back and watched Part One again recently and it hasn't aged well imo |

I have a personal interest in genocide and especially the Einsatzgruppen in WW2.
The most powerful film, that is profoundly disturbing is Come and See that deals with a raid in a village in Byelorussia by Wehrmacht and others.
Truly shockingly realistic

Recent enough Swedish one from 2018 comes to mind, Aniara.
"A spacecraft carries settlers to Mars after there is an apocalypse on Earth. When it strays off course, the consumption-obsessed passengers are prompted to consider their place in the universe."
Don't expect WALL-E! |

"Let The Right One In (Sweden)
One of the best ever vampire films.
So downbeat and certainly not typical in its story."
Excellent suggestion! I'd add the Three Colours trilogy and Roma |

"From the lounge
I have loved you for so long
Also City of God. "
That is a grim movie the opening scene of the chicken being chased is a masterful cinematography
But I think Cinema Paradiso, is my top foreign. Language movie
The child actor and the grandfather was just amazing acting .
All the characters although set in small town in rural Italy are universal
The final scene where the main character watches the cinema reel of all the kissing scene s is just so uplifting
The musical score is beautiful
I have watched Cinema Paradiso countless times ,and still every time I need a box of tissues . |

The best, scariest and most graphic foreign language ever made is the 1985 film called Come and See.
It is an 'anti-war' film that will deeply affect your views about what happened in Eastern Europe during the Wehrmacht's war against the races whom they regarded as inferior; and how those groups of partisans fought back!
A shockingly graphic movie |

Great thread and some superb movie suggestions. I could watch anything with Vincent Cassell like La Haine and Mesirine. I could listen all day to Swedish. But if looking for an actually funny romantic comedy Heartbreaker is a good one. L’Arnacoeur |
