The death of one of the greatest sports reporters, Dickie Davies, who hosted World of Sport on ITV was recently announced.
At a time when the BBC held a monopoly on all the great sporting events in that era (football, golf, horse-racing, boxing and the Olympics, etc), the only other TV channel, ITV, had to make the most of wrestling with Big Daddy and Giant Haystacks, log-rolling and other 'minority' sports.
Dickie Davis, a former ship's purser who bought his clothes in New York from a Suicide Shop that recycled clothes from dead bodies, had to make the best of a bad lot!
The fake wrestling on ITV was truly awful but it filled the slot on Saturday afternoons in opposition to the BBC's Grandstand. |
