I did a course in Indian head massage. It was for 2 days and I enjoyed giving more than receiving. we had theory classes as well to understand the human anatomy of each person. It was lovely. |

There's so much more to massage than the use of strength in your hands.
Any well trained massage therapist knows to protect their hands by correct use of posture, positioning oneself appropriately/ergonomically with respect to the client's position and the body part targeted at any point, using body weight for depth of treatment rather than strength in hands  . There are plenty of techniques which can minimise the pressure on hands...the use of gliding forearms is beautiful and easy on the body and elbows can be used for depth instead of thumbs, for example.
But, you're right - repetitive strain is a common ailment in this profession, particularly in those starting out and doing too many hours rather than building gradually. |
