First time going to Dublin, where’s the best places to go?

Looking for a bit of advice myself and a female friend are staying in Dublin City centre at the end of January (we’re primarily going to the Dublin leather weekend) but would like to see a bit more of the city while we are there. Any pubs/restaurants or places of interest that you would recommend?

It will clearly depend your specific interests but two places that I particularly like are Howth and Dalkey/Killiney and the DART journey between the two places, which is spectacular if you travel onto Bray and Greystones.

Pubs: Grogans, The Long Hall, Whelan's, Mulligans, frank Ryan's plus too many more to mention all in the city centre

Also The Thomas House for a more alternative vibe.

Street 66 and PantiBar for LGBTQ bars

Kilmainham Gaol is well worth doing. Make sure to take the tour.

Lots of nice parks like St Stephens Green, Iveagh Gardens and Merrion Square

Most museums are free too

The emigration and famine museum down on the Quays, beside the moired shop, the Jeanie Johnston is extremely popular.

You'll like The Thomas House. It's pretty much a unique bar in Dublin where Punks, Goths, Mods, Turbojugends etc go.

LGBTQ friendly also.

To see all the contrasting areas of the city, take a walk around the Phoenix Park, Glasnevin Cemetery and the top of Howth Head.

Then to see how the city is expanding take the Luas red line right out to Tallaght, too see all the highrise developments and the Luas green line out to Bride's Glen from where you can walk to the top of Killiney Hill, to get panoramic view of south Dublin.

Pubs in ever city purport to be different, and worth visiting, but they are just homogenised fakes.

Tour around and see what the city is really all about; on each Wednesday morning from 0730, visit the Capuchin Day Centre on Bow Street to see the blue food bags being handed out: not voyeuristically, but empathetically.

Dublin is a city which embodies many contrasts!

Why in the name of sweet Jesus would you go to look at people getting food parcels

Some of them are barely surviving and are embarrassed to be there

Food parcels comment, by Bog-man.

People are encouraged to visit cities to engage in overt consumerism; there is another unseen, or usually unseen, part of Dublin that is worth noting from a distance as I indicated-empathetically by way of understanding but not by gawping at their plight: homelessness poverty, misfortune, hunger, ill-health, etc.

Brother Kevin Crowley has done a lot of good work since 1969; it is worth a visit!

Do Bruxelles do live rock/metal bands or dj only?

There is a programme on TV this week featuring a couple who spend two days in Dublin; I cannot recall its name, but it is being broadcast midweek.

It looked interesting in the preview!

Sorry if this disappoints but I’m not looking for tourism, consumerism or even scenery/history it’s purely hedonism and debauchery

The other things I can do when travelling with family.

Ah ok. Say hello to the lovely John from leathermen of Ireland when here. Tell him I said hi. Re your query. If you happen to be on the 'dark' site maybe hit the events tab and enter dublin as your location and you'll see a few events on that very weekend.

Bruxelles is dj only (for rock music) but fibbers has bands most nights of the week and sometimes on ground level and basement.
