All the publicity about O Connell Street in particular yesterday and today
In my opinion its an absolute kip and I tell my kids not to go anywhere near it due to its well known dangers
So how would you go about fixing it ....the street itself. |

Was it not always a kip, I can remember 15 years ago walking down it being accosted by people looking for change and cigarettes, aggressive begging was the norm, after dark you could be jumped and have your head kicked in.. Was just normal life, I didn't see the programme last night is it worse now? |

Haven't been in Dublin for 5 or 6 years and at least 10 years before that so it wouldn't be fair to give an opinion on how it is now.
All I can say is that I often got to see back of house in a lot of premises and for that reason alone there are a lot of hospitality outlets I would never knowingly eat in or stay in regardless of their reputation and that very much applies in Dublin, across the city. |

I've just recently started going back to Dublin, after decades away from it, and it isn't anywhere near as bad as it was 40 years ago.
The first Tim I ever went down O'Connell Street, which was formerly called Sackville Street, was the day the Nelson's pillar was blown up; its location was precisely where the spire is today.
The quality of life in Dublin is being adversely affected by high rents, a shambolic shortage of houses and rentable accommodation, and minimum wages.
The air quality is now much better, since smokeless fuel was banned. |

First thing I would do is gag the frigging 'do-gooders' who have popped up all over the airwaves today criticising a junior minister for calling the crack cocaine consumers, 'druggies'!
He was forced to apologise because a whinging do gooder felt it was wrong to label such people!! Did ya ever hear such nonsense??!!!
Sorry now but if it quacks like a duck, walks like a duck and looks like a duck, it is a frigging duck!!
How much more of tax payers monies need to be spent on 'rehabilitating' such individuals who chose to partake this drug?
Yes, there are many genuine people who do need help but there are others who just don't want to stop ! They prefer to spend dole money and children's allowance on feeding their habits instead of having a good wash and finding a frigging job!! If a minister said that in public, the do gooders would make sure he'd never be elected again!!!
Successive governments have abandoned o connell Street and its surrounding lane ways to drug dealers and thugs.
Guards need to have a Lugs Brannigan appointed to each station in the city who will clean up the city of the scum bag thugs who openly fight in public knowing the guards will do nothing.
If you don't know who Lugs Brannigan was, look him up!! A real guard!
Right! Rant over...
Now...wait for the bashing from the do gooders...!! Better put on my helmet! |

I'm from Dublin City center, its problems like all capitals tend to with social deprivation and socio economic dynamics at play. But go anywhere I travel regularly, hamburg quite recently Paris and Marseille too. All 3 cities are no better, homelessness drugs crime. This is how the world is now. We are products of society, so society breaths an underbelly. |

I live rather central, and yes.
Always some sort of trouble about, although many are oblivious to it.
The amount of drug abuse is the worst I’ve seen and I’ve lived in many big European cities. Had several confrontations myself |

It's a policy issue and the idea of criminalising drugs is awful and simply has not worked anywhere in Western Europe. Until discussions start around that then I don't think anything significant will change.
I've no doubt there will be a big push to clean up oconnell Street now but all that will do is the move the problem a few streets away. Great success. |

Just wondering who’s wrong the people that use the drugs or the people that supply them
The people that we elect,or the people that police our streets
If as in other countries If you take control of the supply and put the profit you gain back into rehabilitating people then your in with a chance
Then you step down too educate the young people in our schools stop the problem at an early age let them see how it ends up
And that goes for any type of drug ..drink , ,met ,tablets ,cigarettes ,E’s what ever the only way we can stop all of this as a society is if everyone is of the same belief
The war on drugs has taken billions if not trillions and the dealers are so powerful now they tell governments what too do and have done for a while now
So this is my thinking it might not suit everyone’s beliefs but I’m entitled too my opinion

Yeah and possibly even bring in safe injection centres where there's no chance oof prosecution but it's done in a clean environment and taken away from public toilets and playgrounds and the like, it would also be a chance to try educate users and maybe even get some of them to give up, like u said at the end some won't like this but that's my opinion |

In my own county I see good people when we grew up some ended up in prison for one stupid reason or another that are now goosed from one drug or another
It just seems too be that people just pass by these people and say junkies
And they are now but given a chance or not fucked into prison because you where young and stupid and given the benefit of doubt then a lot of these people would be working and paying taxes and probably still alive it’s not a rant but it’s me telling how I feel and Lisa is much the same as me

My town
It’s got problems but nowhere near as bad as some of the other major (and minor) cities I’ve visited. And I’ve been all over the world.
The worst fight and the most heartbreaking psychotic break I ever saw was on grafton street. International footballers falling out of posh nightclubs kicking the heads off each other, D4 heads with their iPhones videoing a woman sobbing and screaming in the middle of the street and no-one doing anything. Disgusting.
I’ve walked up O’Connell street, on the boardwalks, through Abbey and Talbot street, Sherrif street, Gardiner st, so many times alone and at the dead of night and the only time I was ever approached was by two women offering me flipflops cos they seen me hobbling in my heels.
Scobies, d*unks, druggies. They’re still people. Nod if they talk to you and keep walking. It’s an attitude.
Literally my entire life living within 2miles of the city centre and the only time I was ever attacked was by 2 d out blackrock heads in Baggot st Spar.
It’s not for everyone. But it’s a capital city. What do you expect!!?! |

I work in the city centre most days and what I witness is actually disgusting.
People smoking crack and shitting on the street or in Carparks!
This is all in the temple bar and O’Connell bridge area.
Garda do absolutely nothing and it is so easy to catch people.
Cannot understand why they won’t do anything |

To be fair, I think it was worse in the eighties.
I remember two lads trying to take my bicycle out from under me as I was cycling on O'Connell Street in the middle of the day in about 1985. I also remember getting pelted with stones from a derelict site on Marlborough Street around the same time.
The fear of "joyriders" was a huge thing back then as well, and way worse than nowadays. They didn't often venture right into the city centre but every now and again they'd make an appearance. I lived just off Mountjoy Square at the time and flats being broken into wasn't unusual. The one I was in had a bar across the inside of the door to stop it being broken in at night so the fear was real.
My own flat was broken into during the day by three lads that I spotted exiting as I was arriving back for lunch.
I used to cycle a fair bit at night and there was a shop on Dorset street that I used to frequent regularly as it was open late. One night I was going to get milk on the way home but the place was surrounded by Gardaí. The young lad working in it had been stabbed by a lad looking for money. He got forty pounds if I remember correctly. He was arrested an hour later, strung out and covered in blood.
Another night I decided to walk up along the canal from Binn's Bridge to Cross Gunn's Bridge and got accosted by two unsavoury dudes who declared that I was going into the canal unless I emptied my pockets. I legged it and learned a lesson from it. "Don't be stuoid"
Jaysus, maybe I was just an unlikeable git? |

In my opinion Dublin city council has let down our people and the city itself
Dereliction everywhere
No joined up thinking when it comes to transport options
The general clutter everywhere
( not rubbish created by people )
I'm talking about the amount of service boxes everywhere sticking up out of the pavement ...how blind people get around without getting seriously hurt is beyond me
Just one thing to note about the amount of homeless people in the city......yesterday on one of the shittiest days weatherwise in Dublin with rain, thunder and lightning ....all the shelters and bed and breakfasts threw the homeless out to wander the streets until they could go back to their beds last night ....I wouldn't put my dog out in it |

Never experienced any problems in and around O'Connell Street day or night.
I grew up in a city which once had one of Europe's biggest open drug scenes bang in the city centre and I'm still alive. The police eventually moved in, the scene just moved bit further out but the conservatives were happy that the problem was visually not as prominent anymore. Anyhow long story short, today with a more pragmatic humane approach the drug scene isn't out of control anymore: Needle exchanges are set up, clean injection rooms with medical staff on hand, a methadone prescription programme and even a heroin prescription programme now exists for heavily dependent addicts. An approach that could work in Dublin too.
I fully agree with there being too many fast food outlets.

In a nutshell...we are all responsible... drug use is a result of a societal failure to promote and encourage equal opportunities for all . Equal opportunities meaning giving everyone what they need to thrive,,, not giving everyone the same ! |

That's a complete different set of problems BM but yes fully agree with you, there's very little joint up thinking and no or very little interdisciplinary approach to urban planning and development. |

I commute through the city center regularly. I regularly see people smoking crack and dealing drugs out in the open. The quays are the worst part of the city,
the metadone clinics should be moved out of the city center so the drug problems aren't so in your face |

It's systematic failures insuccessive adminstrarion that has our society the way it is...they don't give a fuck about people it's all spin... These problems are man made as we are all connected to it whether we accept it or not
Moving the problem some where else so one can enjoy their flat white with out being exposed to harsh poverty and people falling through the cracks will only move the problem somewhere else not fix or irradicate ìt...
It's in every town and village in the country Dublin is condensed due its population....it is far from pleasant but its a reality

I wasent going to throw in my 2 cents but being in Dublin City centre, I am always in Dublin City Centre here is my musing, a lot of previous comments have indeed highlighted certain aspects of denigradation, I think it is a combination of everything and not just one thing.
I regularly going into town on a Saturday and literally could pinpoint where certain regulars will be from all aspects of society will be, the pandemic has certainly exacerbated the demise of O’Connell St, people are no longer browsing in shops, reduced hours and lack of footfall. The lack of a visible and viable “garda” presence has scared people from coming in.
One area seems to be a “meeting” ground and play area for the residents of a former hotel now converted for visitors on behalf of the government
Certainly I wouldn’t walk through O’Connell St at certain times, unless I had some heavies with me.

Quite the opposite my friend.
Worked for many years in New York Bronx District directly in this whole area of cleaning up zones where illegal drugs were openly been sold and consumed in public. The difference in NY is that we called it out as it was without any sugar coating of the truth whereas here do gooders jump in to protect the 'feelings' of the junkies who continue to destroy city districts with their behaviours when the do gooders finally shut the fuck up dishing out their nonsensical drivel and move on to the next do gooder topic.
Bottom line is our Gardai need to be allowed to flex their muscles and do their jobs without fear of the consequences of enforcing the law... City Council officials need to be made accountable on their performance on a yearly basis whilst in office.
If they don't perform and contribute to improving the life of the city, then show them the door! They are dead wood fat cats only interested in claiming expenses.
This is what happened in the Bronx area I worked in. Police Precint chief and District officials got on board in earnest sincerety, with the plan to clean up the area we lived and worked in and had huge success...
Rehabilitated drug addicts thanked the committee afterwards for saving their lives. District citizens thanked them for saving the local area..
So sunshine I do know what I'm talking about..

Ah I don't think anyone will give you a bashing .. it would be wasted on you .. you clearly lack understanding and/or experience with drug addictions and society. Lucky you
Quite the opposite my friend.
Put that in your crack cocaine pipe and smoke it!"
Thanks for proving my point..
Spoken like a through dinosaur..

Urban decay, and the long term decline of city centre streets is a result of several factors common throughout the world.
Out of town shopping malls is a principal reason for the decline; Dublin is now surrounded by new shopping malls, such as in Tallaght and Dundrum on the south side.
The city centre therefore needs to be repurposed.
Belfast city centre is also in decline and very obviously so.
There are some very good examples of city planners working in cooperation with developers and entrepreneurs, but they are rare.
Cityscapes change, and fall into decline; it is inevitable. |
