Winter blackout contingencies?

There were media warnings today in both the Republic and in the UK about the real possibility of winter blackouts if there is a confluence of several contributory factors:
very low temperatures
unusually low windspeeds
breakdown at powerstations
gas supply problems, and
other supply chain issues.
I have made specific plans for being able to light my home, in the event that power is interrupted for long periods.
I have found that if I light the central staircase of my home, then it is possible to use all the other rooms, albeit dimly.
A stock of batteries will keep my various DAB and FM radios and MP3 functioning
What provisions have other members made for this real possibility? |

More fear.. If its not covid its energy rises.. If its not energy rises its blackouts, the real solution to this is to stop listening to the media, all they want to do is scare the life out of you |

I’ve been so desensitised over the years I’m not sure if salacious will do it for me anymore |

Winter blackouts will be able to reverse that for you - once you've gone so long without |

As for provisions - briquettes/wood stocked, bottled water, I can cook on the stove with food reserves like rice, pasta, tins, lentils, crackers, oats etc...candles, warm clothes and blankets in house.
I've to invest in batteries yet...
I'll definitely never run out of toilet paper, standard or wet and baby wipes!
If all else fails, my parents are prepared for Armageddon - I know where I'm going if I get cold and hungry - the car is always half filled at minimum |

I managed 3 days with no electricity in wintee before and had no advance prep.
No heating either but water was the real problem as it needed a pump to drive it from a well.
If theres planned blackouts to conserve electricity most of us will manage just fine... humans are adaptable survivors |

I've 2 solid fuel stoves to heat and cook - one of them heats the immersion - a pile of candles, some emergency lights the previous owner installed and two hands to keep me happy.
As others said, all hyped up in the media. We've power cuts every year because of the Gael storms and just soldier through it. |

Did the immersion heating stove work OK in a previous blackout? mine heats rads and immersion tank but is useless in a blackout as it needs electricity to power the water pumps. in a power cut the water in the stove will boil. I'm looking at solar pv system that has a small battery that will kick in to power a few essentials. paperback pornn has had its day |

I got myself a generator last summer. Would run a house no problem. And I know plenty that picked themselves up the “just in case” generators.
They have banned solid fuel in new build houses so you have no fall back if you have no power |
