"For personal reasons, I have extremely clear memories of several football crowd disasters: Ibrox Park in 1971; Bradford in 1985; and Hillsborough Stadium in 1989. There was also Heysel in Belgium. I have just read that there may be hundreds of dead and injured at a football stadium on the island of Java, Indonesia. Football crowds, especially when panicked are exceptionally dangerous phenomena, as is again the case on Java. " The death toll is now close to two hundred and will probably exceed that; crowds, especially at mass sporting events are very unpredictable and behave completely irrationally, as has been the case there in the Far East. | |||
