I went around 20 yrs ago .
First night was a good night great craic second night, was good but we found the lads there didn't book into hotels and all trying to get with women to get a room, come the third night the place was full of body odour and lads still going round to get into any hotel. It was a great craic though. |

Decades ago, it had a reputation for attracting single farmers, after the harvest had been gathered in, and they had time on their hands to consult a matchmaker at the Hydro.
I would never be enticed to go, because it would be an admission that all other potential options had been attempted and failed and The Hydro was the Last Chance Saloon.
The Father Ted episode where d*unk balding single unkempt farmers on one side of the dancefloor are eyeing the equally oddball women on the opposite side is probably an accurate of Lisdoonvarna to this day!

Viv is from Limerick and we were down seeing her kith and kin at the weekend. It never occurred to me to go to it before, but we weren't far away so thought we'd go for a bit of a giggle.
Let's of older folks line dancing to Country music during the afternoon, and by the time we were leaving in the early evening you could see the young bucks heading in for the strut.
As for the matchmaking, I struck out but Viv left with five phone numbers, 3 suckling calves and 20 acres of rough grazing outside lahinch... |
