It is a fantastic city. Have been many times. Explore and enjoy. Plenty to discover. If you get a chance to eat Leberkase go for it. Loads of mustard. Great snack. |

I was in Hamburg years ago
The are around Saint Pauli which is the red light area has a lot of good bars and other night life, but can be a bit rough.
It depends on what you are specifically interested in seeing: Nazi history, river tours, etc.
If I was in the area again I would visit the coast, and also Luneberg Heath to visit the honey farms.
Hamburg was obliterated by the United States and British strategic 'round the clock' WW2 bombing campaigns; there is bound to be a museum dedicated to this tragic aspect of Hamburg life that cost so many civilian lives. |

Defintely go for a harbour boat tour. Take the 2 hour tour if available, but 1 hour is also good.
There are multiple museum ships in the harbour to visit. I suggest doing at least one.
Good food near the port in the Portuguese Quarter ("Dietmar-Koel-Strasse"; not just Portuguese).
Reeperbahn and Schanzenviertel for dinner and nightlife.
Very good public transport, so no taxis needed.
If you're there on a Sunday, set an early alarm for the Fish Market. Get there by 7am!!! Very unique experience. |

I'm from just outside Hamburg. Agree with all the tips already posted.
If into soccer, two local clubs, Hamburg and St.Pauli, both 2.Bundesliga, good games to watch.
When out drinking, make sure you insist to pay everytime you order.
There is still the odd place who see tourists coming a mile off and let you open a tap, which sometimes a drink might get added to when you're not looking...
Other than that, enjoy my beautiful home. |

Beautiful city and very vibrant nightlife. Definitely the harbour boat tour is highly recommended.

If you get a chance to get a ticket to Club Equinoxe, weekend events there are worth it.
.
One last thing, don't be surprised and DO NOT stop and stare if you see a deal happening on the street around St Paul area. Dealers don't like that and they get nervous and suspicious about you, especially if you are foreign looking, which could land you in trouble.

An absolute cesspit of debauchery. Makes Amsterdam look like Disney land
Around the reeperbahn is where all the nightlife and bars are. Now around those parts it’s an actual shit hole but some lovely spots down along the river. Loads of 1 euro bars dotted about the place where literally every drink no matter what it is, is 1 euro
Ps. The bouncers are stern, stern but fair

The one regret I have about my last visit to Hamburg is that I did not visit the unique Elbe tunnel and lifts, that were featured in the film, The Odessa File, from 1974, with Jon Voight and Mary Tamm, now sadly deceased. |
