A word that was in common usage at home, back in the day, was nyomp. I have no idea how it should be spelled but that's how it sounds.
A nyomp was a piece cut out roughly from it's place, half cut out and half torn out.
A bad barber would take nyomps out of someone's hair. A fella using a hedge trimmer for the first time might take nyomps out of a hedge. Etc.

For decades, my favourite word and my modus vivendi has been:
independent.
As I have now retired, I can do what I want, within reason, when I want to, and there is nothing any person can do about it.
