Very true and did it without any government aided funding to boxing. I believe her local gym didn’t have a toilet until recently.
Politicians too busy funding the GAA to get votes to consider minority sports |

"Tom Crean
Not trying to suck up (excuse hidden agenda comment) but you could be right. Needs to be a person that sacrificed"
Not someone I knew much about until I went to his pub in Annascaul and did some reading about him. An unbelievable human being so I always mention him in discussions about Irelands greatest person after what he did. |

In fairness for a small little island we have punched above our weight (pardon the pun) in so many fields. Between science and industry, sport, politics, culture and charity work there are any number that could be nominated as greatest. But for me I wouldn’t have Katie at the top. |

Neither Connolly or Larkin were Irish.
Parnell was sleeping with another mans wife. An early day Faber
For me Irelands greatest would have to be Mary Robinson for breaking the glass ceiling in becoming president and for her work with human rights issues. John Hume for his work in bring peace on the island.
Katie is a great sports person and probably out best females beside Sonia. |

Phil Lynott! Rory Gallagher! Van Morrison!
Huge influences referred to by so many people over the world.
Not to speak of Seamus Heany, James Joyce, Samuel Beckett, Oscar Wilde, etc.
The problem here is we have far too many to choose from.
Let's just be happy saying It's a Great Wee Country |

Thought he appointed himself. He was always banging on and wrapped in the flag. Has he fallen from grace and no longer well regarded? (Don’t follow cage fighting so not up to speed on his latest antics).
No idea who the other chap is. Never heard of him. |

The campaigning lawyers, Mary Robinson and Mary McAleese are fabulous role models of what can be achieved by intelligent, educated, energetic women who work tirelessly to progress society, remove injustices and empower disenfranchised groups. |

"Wouldn't be a fan of boxing in general.
Michael Collins?
If Collins was alive in today's Time, the media would dig up so much dirt they'd have him looking like Gerry Adams. "
I mean it's not hard, he did basically create a terrorist cell, but one mans terrorist is another mans freedom fighter. |

Seriously. I do understand what they have done but the greatest irish person I don't think so. My post might seem harsh but I can't pit them in the same category as any irish greats. |

It was a tongue-in-cheek inclusion to test for reactions to the corrupt megalomaniacal John Charles, who meddled in Irish politics and the lives of Irish citizens for decades. |

One person who deserves to be admired, nationally and internationally, is Roger Casement.
He was hanged for treason, but his long report on the horrendous regime that the Belgian King, Leopold, set up in the Congo did much to stop this cruel and barbaric exploitation, that Joseph Conrad also exposed in his book, Heart of Darkness, that was the inspiration for the film Apocalypse Now. Leopold's regime murdered 10 million and mutilated another 10 million. The Congo was not a colony of Belgium, but the King's personal land! |

"Arthur Guinness
He was a loyalist and a royalist. Would sack and evict any of his workers who supported the republican movement in the early 1900s. "
Bit slow off the mark here considering he founded the brewery in 1759 he did well to last to the 1900's...unless you mean the company..
Though the irony is the company has been one of the largest contributors to the Irish economy since independence through trade and tourism.. |

Just my opinion based on his life |

Just my opinion based on his life" You opinion doesn't change the fact he was born and raised in Edinburgh, by all definitions that makes him Scottish. As I said, he did plenty for us but he is Scottish.
Imagine if I was born in New York, raised in New York but came over here at the age of 20 claiming I'm Irish, you wouldn't tell me I'm Irish, would you? |

He played for Ireland. Ergo he considered himself Irish. He obviously doesn’t fit in with your narrative of great Irish folk.
Who knew ??? |

Every rugby player from Northern Ireland,if they identify as Irish or British or other, have to play for Ireland.
Who knew??
You should.
Do you think players that identify as British play for England??? |
