I know this can be a life changing and frankly saving surgery,
However
Is it just me or is more and more people getting this done as If it'd a trend?
I've heard and seen of quite healthy people getting this operation when they don't need it but because everyone else seems to be getting it.
I really hope it doesn't become a trend where young people feel like they need to get it too feel confident, just for those that actually need it
Note: I'm not hating on this operation lol I also know it's their body too. |

I can't say I have ever heard of anyone getting gastric sleeve surgery who didn't need it so I don't see how it could be a trend .It is a big op and there is a lot of life style changes after it and I don't see how anyone who didn't need it would put themselves through such an op and one that can go wrong and have massive health risks if it does.
There may be more getting it as it's become an option because more places are doing it but as I've said most people who get it need it as other avenues that have been tried have not helped them. |

I totally agree, I'd say out of the ones I've heard about most needed it but a few could have just changed their diet slightly and lifestyle changes could be grand,
Only reason I said trend, because like the Turkish teeth trend, alot of people with good teeth are going over getting theirs done because everyone else was |

Cant see it been a trend , maybe cause its more accessible, but anyone I've seen get it it was definitely a major decision. Follow a few that have has it done and honestly don't think I could out myself through it, yet every now and than I think about it. |

Nutrition education should begin in Primary School and Home Economics should be compulsory up to Junior Cert. Some basic education would go a long way I think in reducing many chronic illnesses and in preventing the need for such drastic measures. |

I agree. Ive come across people who had this procedure done in Turkey. I think its commercial for profit medicine at its most barbaric. The human body is meant to be self regulating, keeping itself healthy. I think its a very risky procedure, and Irish doctors wont want to get involved if illness develops. There are more natural ways to lose weight. |

Lots of people are getting it done in Turkey because its cheap, well its cheap for a reason, the op will not be performed with due care and consideration, there have been numerous deaths as a result of botched Turkish gastric surgery's even liposuction, quick Google search will back this up..

Most people would prefer to get any medical treatment performed at home rather than abroad, but unfortunately the cost in Ireland is very prohibitive. This does not reduce the persons need, just limits their access.
Good diet, education and movement are of course important but its not a one size fits all and for some, these kinds of procedures can literally save and restart their lives. Many people had no access to medical care in years gone by, it wasn't a trend when it became more accessible but an indication of a growing need and access to information.

People die in Irish hospitals as well. Not sure why things like this are cheaper in Turkey but then practically everything is cheaper in Turkey so the hospitals over there will have lower costs no doubt!

Surgery should be the very last step when no other options are left; it is a very serious, potentially fatal decision to take.
Education, and counselling to identify deep-seated underlying psychological or psychiatric factors that are contributing to the manifested problem is a critical initial step.
Self-management, forever, after the surgery, is much more complex than most people realise. |
