Right gang, share your reminisces of Ireland as it was. Some details are long lost and forgotten. Let’s dig up a few. I’ll start off.

Remember when you were the only house on the street with a phone and people would ring looking for other people on the street? Or when you would get people coming up to the house to tell you there was a phone call on the public phone box for you? |

Remember when we got our first VHS player. Being able to record your favourite tv shows and being too afraid to speak in case your voice was recorded too.
Calling into to video library and picking out your movie for the night along with a heap of snacks. Then having to rewind the video before bringing it back but always forgetting to do it.
And having a sneaky look in the adult section

Sean Lemass (the father in law of Charlie Haughey) was An Taoiseach; he visited Belfast and was pelted with snowballs by Ian Paisley.
An unsuccessful attempt was made to asassinate the Queen and Prince Philip by dropping a concrete block from tall scaffolding in Belfast City Centre onto the bonnet of their car.
That was in 1966; since then every bridge that any royal visitor to the north passes under is checked and guarded! Fact.
And a plate of chips in a cafe could be bought for 10d, which is 4.5p. |

'When we were young nobody died
And nobody got older,
The toughest kid in the street
Could always be bought over,
And the first time that you loved
You had all your life to give
At least that's what you said.
The first time you got d*unk
You drank pernod and dry cider,
Smashed a window in as the police came round the corner,
You didn't have no time to run...
And your dad stood up for you
As the judge said you're a fool.
Babies, sex and flagons, shifting women, getting stoned;
Robbing cars, bars and pubs, rubber johnnies, poems;
Starsky and Hutch gave good TV;
And Starsky looked like me
When we were young'

I remember visiting the laundry room of a working Magdalene Laundry and being shocked by the conditions the young girls were having to s###e in ; when I mentioned the injustice of this in school the following week, one fellow pupil from a very devout catholic family, was emphatic about their treatment because they were fallen women who had sinned by having sexual relations and becoming pregnant whilst unmarried!
It was decades before this scandal was exposed by Mary Raftery from RTE.

Remember when driving to Brittas Bay meant 4 of ye fighting on the back seat with no seat belts between ye,stopping to let someone wee or puke at the side of the road, driving through The Scalp in Enniskerry and having to be quiet or the rocks would fall ( my dad might have been lying)
Getting to a packed beach and trying to find your parents shivering behind the same wind break as thousands of others as we all got them in Dunnes...it was like when the penguins got back to the ice cap wandering around

No suncream on anyone cause Irish skin didn't need it
Going home ,getting into the car with the plastic seats so hot you could cook a pizza on them
Playing games to keep your mind off puking...spotting the petrol stations...Esso was always the winner

And heres a gem, rem when the petrol stations gave coupons when ya spent 10 pound on petrol, and when ya had enough you could redeem for mugs,digital watches etc.. And rem when shell petrol in early 80 s gave half tokens and the quest was to get the other half to make up a full token ranging from fuk all up to think 100000 pound. God damm some of these winners became famous on the late late show. All be it for 20 secounds about. Lol |

"Listening to Altanic 252 radio station.
"
The massive aerial and brodcasting equipment of which now form the basis of RTE's Long Wave service transmitting into GB.
RTE reception is not great in parts of the North, for example, and 252 LW is very good, but receivers for Long Wave are now increasingly rare.
I have a Roberts radio with LW that is now impossible to buy, an FM reception in the Mourned is very poor because of the topography.
RTE stopped broadcasting on AM 567 many years ago, and when they threatened to stop LW there was an outcry from the diaspora in England and beyond.

Do you remember your first skateboard? Mine was a blue sitco rocket with red wheels in the late 70's, very similar to the retro inspired nickel boards available today. We didn't have skate parks, we rode our skateboards anywhere we could find with smooth tarmac. I remember reading in the Cork Examiner local gombeen politicians were calling for funding to build skateparks because us kids on skateboards were becoming a menace to society. |

When I used to attend Mass in a catholic church, many decades ago, I remember women who had recently given birth (after having had sex 40 weeks earlier) being obliged to walk up the length of the chapel to be churched at the altar by a priest, that is she had to be cleansed of the fact that she had given birth.
Why did Irish citizens, especially mature women put up with this utterly ridiculous nonsense for so long, and within living memory?
As the broadcaster, Ray D'Arcy, said on air, the catholic church really fucked up this country.

Holy f'in shit I'm/we're old
How many remember the black public phone ?
They had an ( A and B ) button and a rotary dial ,,,,,
Did you know that on those particular phones you could make free calls ?
You could tap the number into the phone by way of the the two " pins " that you placed the handset on.....
( ie ) 1 tap = number 1 , 2 taps = 2 and so on ,,,,, 10 taps = 0
Thinking back I possibly spent more time tapping that actually talking lol

I can remember that in public telephone boxes, long before phone cards, and 2p slots, there were two buttons, A and B; the phone had to be loaded in advance.
Not so very long ago, so called long distance calls had to be done through the operator.
The Dublin businessman who fronted the organisation which modernised the phone system was the Superquinn CEO Fergal Quinn, whose first supermarket had been in Dundalk's Clanbrassil Street; again long ago . |
