Newry Down |
Boys from the County Armagh by Bridie Gallagher,
who was from Donegal, but actually lived most of her life in Belfast.
This song was a massive hit in the 1960s. It was broadcast daily on Radio Eireann, now RTE Radio 1.

I would have to say Joe McDonnell by the wolfetones. I know the wolfetones are controversial on this island but some of the songs they sing about ireland are amazing. They will stand the test of time wether you like the songs or not. |

"Dublin in the rare auld times
The town I loves so well
The Island
3 great songs. Especially the town I loved so well. "
“With their tanks and their guns oh my god what have they done, to the town I loved so well?” Gets me every time. Seems extra relevant with everything going on in Ukraine right now. |

I got into my car to drive to work and my spotify came on automatically for some reason...
It played a song by The Chieftains and Sinead O Connor
The Foggy Dew
I'd read it above but never heard it before
My god it's simply stunning ...I was nearly crying driving ....incredible song |

As beautiful a song as it is its the lyrics that do it for me,sums up the Irish psyche in 1 song
The brits were here looking for Irish men to go fight and free small countries from oppression, what the fuck about us and our freedom?
Whataboutism used at its best as only we can do

"Have you forgotten your roots Mr Mc Carthy, what about Lovely Leitrim ?????? "
Well now, I haven't forgotten my roots at all. I think it's a great song, better even than some of the Scottish ones listed above, it's just not as good as Jim McCann singing about Fiach McHugh O'Byrne! I like a bit of slaughtering in a song! |

The sash.
The Sash
Sure l'm an Ulster Orangeman, from Erin's isle I came, To see my British brethren all of honour and of fame,
And to tell them of my forefathers who fought in days of yore, That I might have the right to wear, the sash my father wore!
cho: It is old but it is beautiful, and its colors they are fine It was worn at Derry, Aughrim, Enniskillen and the Boyne.
My father wore it as a youth in bygone days of yore And on the Twelfth I love to wear the sash my father wore
For those brave men who crossed the Boyne have not fought or died in vain Our Unity, Religion, Laws, and Freedom to maintain,
If the call should come we'll follow the drum, and cross that river once more That tomorrow's Ulsterman may wear the sash my father wore!
Chorus
And when some day, across the sea to Antrim's shore you come, We'll welcome you in royal style, to the sound of flute and drum
And Ulster's hills shall echo still, from Rathlin to Dromore As we sing again the loyal strain of the sash my father wore!
Chorus |
