Search for profiles in that area, find ones you like, read them (very important!) to see if you're compatible and message them if you think of something meaningful to say!
I.E. I don't want to meet anyone who's just passing through. Personal reasons. I made it clear in my written profile. If you choose to still message me letting me know you'll be in my area - I'll take it as you either didn't read my profile or didn't care about my preferences which in both cases shows me that you don't really respect me enough to care.
So yes, that and every other message will be travelling straight in a bin.
If I didn't want to meet someone who's passing by my area and didn't specify it in my profile - I'm the asshole for not letting anyone know in advance, but I'm also in charge of my preferences, so the message still end up in a bin.
If I didn't mind/preferred meeting people from far away - I would still prefer anything but "I'm in your area".
"I like the way you look/sound/carry yourself, let's play 20 questions (or do whatever)" sounds a 100 times better than "hi, I'm in your area, wanna chat?)"
