Don't have your chopping board against the wall , chop them on a table where the juice and fumes from the onions will dispearse into the room instead of back against you.
Also some of the other tips, rinse them in water but that will remove some of the flavour. |

All the idea about involving water are pretty much bang on. You don't even need to wet the onion really though. Just having a glass of water beside the chopping board is usually enough. Rinsing your hands and keeping them wet will prevent it following you our of the room but like, who doesn't wash their hands when preparing food? |

Thanks for all the tips 
Not sure if you'll ever catch me wearing snorkel/swimming goggles, chewing gum or bread while cutting the onions under water though
I will keep an open mind on borrowing someone's person for said chore (if mine isn't around)
I will try a damp knife on a damp chopping board without cutting the root first |
