Every new year I hit the training hard... and generally keep going through out the year... But this year I seem to be looking for every excuse under the sun to take a day off... Any tips to kick my ass back into gear |

Just do something start small. I swore I'd be back to the gym last week, still haven't but I aimed for 10000 steps today and I went for a 4k walk this evening. |

You’ve just or I should say your body has forgotten the reason why you trained in the first place. I’m where you are now!! Just try and start the process again, give it three weeks and you’ll be back at it. Don’t do what makes you happy as not training obviously does not make you happy. Best of luck, kick on!! |

Its a new year. You're older. Try a different kind of training, maybe buy a kayak, go hill walking, long distance walking, sea swimming, martial arts? Do you confine your training to an indoor gym? Its always good to challenge your mind and body. |

"I was actually looking at cycling.... "
Done a bit but it’s not very efficient. Don’t get me wrong, great exercise but it takes a lot of time. A one hour cycle is ok but a one hour jog burns a lot more plus you can go slower on a bike, coast, can’t do that with a jog. |

If he enjoyed cycling he is more likely to stick with it. Which is more efficient than doing something else with a higher burn, not enjoying it & giving up |

I was trying to inspire him. I’ve lots of experience training and swim 6k per week at the moment. He is clearly used to training and maybe needs advice from lads in similar situations. |

Watch any David Goggins video on YouTube and if you aren't blanking each and all close family members/friends in the pursuit of 'staying hard' - not in a non floppy dick way - but there's no chance you'll have a flaccid member anyway when you commit to the Church of Goggins then I'll eat my shorts B Simpson style. Its lunatic level 5 territory but it'll get you going |

1hr on a bike will burn more calories thslan running...fact....go at a good steady pace, keep the heart rate up...moderate steady state can burn twice the calories and more depending on the effort over an hr....riding a bike turns you into the most efficiant mammal on the planet(in theory)depending on fitness levels, you can def burn a shitload more calories cycling to running/jogging...plus its easier on your joints...find what uou like and enjoy the journey...may it be running....riding a bike...swimming...weight training....do get too hung up and pick out mini goals to look toward....small victories |

Go look at GCN on you tube and they have advice on hit sessions on the bike.
If you doing the right stuff in quick sprints, hills, one min efforts or 5 min effort you can burn lots of cals.
But it's more than burning cals. It's the wind in your face, being surrounded by nature, having time to think or thinking only about the ride and not your problems.
Running is great but it will wreck your knees eventually.
Or go join a club and find others to cycle with and have a coffee. You could be up to 100km spins in no time if that's what you want.
Exercise doesnt just have to be about the cal burn. If it's not fun you simply wont enjoy it and you will quit.
And its January and its shit for everyone this time of the year. The days will get longer and the weather better and it will get easier. |

I enjoy these chats with active people that train as I’m always trying to learn and improve. But you are incorrect regarding the cycling v running regarding calorie burn. Running an hour can burn twice as many calories compared with cycling, obviously depended on pace. Yes, cycling is a great option if you have joint issues. |

Calorie burn is defined by the persons weight and fitness....
Personally im definitly able to use a higher calorie burn on a bike than i would running due to the fact i can go faster for longer on a bike....that is why a bike tends to be more efficient in najority of ppl doing so...especially on road bikes....if you can average anywhere from 25-30kph depending on your body weight you will need to be able to run around 9mph average over same duration for the same amount of calories used....these things should be taken into account...not just the exercise but the exicusion and personal effort involved...ie...the faster u go...the more your body uses in energy |

Best tip I was ever given was this.. don't go to the gym everyday to destroy yourself, go for the routine.
That'll help you stick with whatever you try to do. Too many people burn themselves out especially during the new year resolution phase. Just keep turning up, do something, and eventually the first step of just starting will become natural. You need to first train your mind to commit to the process. |
