The money was great wasn't it
I got one pound my first day and went into a chemist on the way home
My mum had complained about rough skin on her hands so I bought her Atrixo hand cream for 80 pence
Felt like a king

I worked in a garage, a petrol station and car workshop, for seven shillings and six pence per week.
That is 37.5 new pence, after 1971, when decimalisation was introduced.
Garage is long gone, owner is long dead, but I am still thriving and surviving, intact, despite battery acid accidentally having been spilled on me. |

My parents did farming, B&B and offered horseback riding. All of us children "worked". We'd be the service staff, kitchen staff as well as cleaners.
We'd be cutting, bailing and bringing in hay. We'd be stacking, bagging and bringing in turf, as well as picking stones out of the field or pulling ragwort. Though the farming stuff we were expected to do, not paid for and we always had a laugh (even while bitching and moaning).
What we were paid for is the horse trekking. We would be given a cut of the takings rather than a wage. My father wanted to instill a sense for business in us.
First real job (part time) was on a fruit and veg stand.
First full time job was in a call center.

Shift work has to be the worst work. Wrecks havoc on sleep pattern and social life |

I worked on a funfair too but it was in South Korea. The fair was run by Welsh gypsies.
We were told we had work permits. Found out we hadn't when immigration called and we were told take off the uniforms and blend into the crowd!
Blend in no less and there not a western face in the whole city besides the carny folk lol |

"Lounge boy at 12 in a pub in Francis Street Dublin 8.
And I started as a lounge boy at 14, sounds like I was too old for the job "
When I started as a lounge boy the pint was 45 pence and you always got a tip
Once it went over 50 pence the tips disappeared |

Vitoria coach station in the ticket office. Loved that job, free travel on all London transport, free uniform and decent wage to boot(1500 a month in 1997 was a decent wage) ... Only if I knew how good it was I wouldn't have turned up to work blasted every day, sorry if you bought a ticket from the rather freindly bloodshot 17 year old ticket clerk.
Eventually got fired for making too many mistakes, I wonder why |

First job was picking potatoes when I was 12 we got £4 a day working from 8.30 until 5. We used to cycle to and from there every day and thought we were making great money when we got paid at the end of the week. Then went home and handed it over to mum and I got to keep £1 for treats. |

First job was picking blackcurrants on a fruit farm. Got a few pence per pound.
First wages, me and a pal bought a half block of ice cream each and sat in garden of a derelict hoist eating it in the sunshine!
My mother nearly knocked my block off - from them on, half my money went to my mother and half for myself - took me weeks to save for an LP! |
