Where will you NEVER re-visit again
Jump to: Newest in thread
Dominican Republic. It was very pretty and I had a nice time but it was one of those places where you just felt that they were putting the arm in everywhere you went. You had to pay both an entry fee and exit fee on arrival and departure from the country, so it was just continual. |

Since my only visit to this much-lauded tourist attraction decades ago, I agree with Doctor Samuel Johnson's critique of TGC.

"Whats wrong witg lurgan very fond of my wee town people are great craic
And some of them even have a great crack!
Was in Detroit once - very depressing place, awful poverty"
I really love 1960s Motown music, but Detroit Michigan now more resembles a third world country with pervasive poverty and decay, than the former Motortown that was at the very heart of American prosperity, American popular music and the so-called American Dream.
It is now derided as the Rust Belt of America. |

East Berlin. I crossed over the Berlin Wall at Checkpoint Charlie, controlled by the American Army, and then across the Death Zone which was then guarded by 9,000 Ovtcharkas (dogs).
East Berlin, at that time had barely changed since WW2, and was one of the most intimidating places to visit; Stasis police everywhere.
Since 1991, I can never visit East Berlin ever again, because the USSR controlled DDR no longer exists, mercifully.
As one resident said of his life in East Berlin,"We live like dogs here, constantly under surveillance by the Stasi."

Khabarovsk, in the Russian Far East, just across the River Amur from China; and one railway stop away from Vladivostok on the Trans-Siberian Express railway to Moscow.
A bleak city, pot-holed roads, soviet-style high rise buildings and fear etched on the populace's faces. |

Do you mean the place near Pettigo where people (of faith) voluntarily starve themsemes, walk barefoot over muddy stones, and stay in a windswept building that resembles a Victorian-era prison, with the objective of somehow strengthening their delusional belief in a fabricated shepherd from Wales.
Formerly, elderly Catholics used to speak approvingly of this island on a lake, but I haven't heard Saint Patrick's Purgatory mentioned in decades, especially in mainstream Irish media.
Have young people come to their senses and are staying away? |

"The Vatican. Creeped me out and the most disgusting toilets I’m ever experienced "
I note the The Pope, the head of an organisation that still regards women with the Catholic Church as second class citizens, and that abused and exploited Irish catholic girls for generations has issued a New Year international press release about violence against women in society. |

Actually I have thought of a place and that would be the war museum in Ho Chi Minh city. I don’t regret going, it was an eye opening experience and I would recommend it but having seen it I wouldn’t want to go back. |

""Worth seeing, but not worth going to see!"
There you go Jubal, the funniest thing you've ever posted and it's a quote by someone else "
It's one of the best quotes I have ever come across; I first heard that quote in a English Literature class a long time ago.
Dr. Johnson was a very erudite educated man, who was widely travelled in his time, and widely quoted.
It aptly describes the Giant's Causeway; I would never go to see it again.

" NYC, dirty, chaotic, robbery "
During an earlier part of my life, I managed to get Green Card, and went to live in New York.
I hated the place: at that time it was indeed dirty, corrupt, crime-ridden, pervasively dangerous, and best avoided.
It tainted my view of that enormous diverse country. |

The most distressing place I ever visited was the Nazi's (very first) Dachau Concentration Camp just outside Munich in Bavaria.
It brought me to tears; the evil insanity of a massive facility designed to intern, subjugate, humiliate, dispossess and ultimately murder personae non gratae (unwelcome people) from a formerly cultured European society.
If you go to one of these Nazi camps once, you won't want to return! |

Two cities in South America. Matanzas in Cuba, an industrial port city away from tourist areas. We were lucky to get out the there in one piece. Abject poverty and the side of Cuba they don't want you to see.
Belfast, we been really unlucky or its just a kip. I've had work vans damaged because of the Southern reg plates. Been spat at and abused for being dubs (we aren't dubs ) and the night of her graduation in Belfast we got more of the same while out for drinks and the bar man in the well know pub said if we aren't okay with that type of attention we should f*#k off back down south...so we did. Beautiful city but Jesus it needs a lot more chill. Hopefully this year we will get to experience some more terrible towns |

I worked in Belfast on and off for donkeys years, had a base there for 17 years and maybe it's just because it's more male in groups thinking the have a historic point to prove. I've never had one of our female employees complain about abuse but we kept a tab for insurance and over 30k worth of damage to cars vans and equipment. Not a single cent of damage at any of our other four bases in the country. We closed out doors there in 2018 for staff safety issues, don't regret it for second.
I've made some life long friends from my time there and I'm sure there are people with far more positive stories than I have. That said it's just got a bad vibe about it if you are from the south. No joy in a city where you have to actively watch yourself and your accent on a night out. Hopefully things will change in time but right now there's not a hope I would bring family up |

I found the People to appear a bit inbred ??. I know it's very cut off and all that but I got a bad vibe off the place. Went to a nightclub and had a meathead want to start a fight with me, thankfully I dodged that but even up to that point I wasn't impressed. I met a scot a few years later that lived there for a while herself, she wasn't surprised by my story. |

wow, that sounds grim - maybe Im naive but Ive had some mates from Dublin, Galway and Louth visit Belfast many times over the years with no issues, - but to be fair having lived in Belfast for many years, I wouldnt ever go out or visit the parts of the city where you would tend to find the sorts of knuckle draggers that would cause that sort of trouble and thankfully I've never encountered it!
It never ceases to amaze me that there are parts of belfast where the locals have never been out for a night in the city centre....and selfishly I hope that continues, as they are exactly the type of folk who will have been hurling the abuse!
I could be wrong but I'd be surprised if the brexit thing was any sort of factor - the majority of NI voted against it and those who are making currently making most noise about it were those that supported the project all along! |

For an experience I'd say the holocaust museum in Berlin - genuinely harrowing to see what people went though just a generation ago. Worth seeing out of respect for the suffering, but wouldnt want to revist it.
Destination wise I'd add my vote for New york
It was an experience seeing the madness of it all but not somewhere I'd want to return as it was manic, unfriendly and stupidly expensive
Passing what I presume was a homeless person shitting into a newspaper in the middle of the footpath, at 2pm in the afternoon just round the corner from my ridiculous over priced Manhattan hotel was a particular highlight
I suppose he at least used a newspaper!!
