Was at Newgrange Megalithic tomb this morning for 08:43 for the Winter Solstice sunrise. Sadly I didn't see the sunrise. But I did meet some people celebrating the Solstice with drums and boughrans chants and lanterns. I thought it was lovely how they found meaning and significance in the Solstice. |

Newry Down |
About thirty years ago, I successfully applied to the OPW (Office of Public Works) for winter solstice passes for Newgrange.
IH applied on numerous occasions and was eventually chosen, which I regarded as an incredible privilege; a once in a lifetime opportunity to see this spectacular event.
Sadly, at the last minute I was unable to go but the couple I gave the passes to said it was eerily stunning to see the sun coming through the slot and illuminating the ancient markings within the central chamber.
Newgrange is not unique in this respect; but our ancestors studied the sound and the planets very carefully, over 5,000 years ago; which in astronomical, anthropological and evolutionary terms is the mere blink of an eyelid. |
