I would thoroughly recommend a walk within Tollymore Forest up to the Drinns; fabulous view of the Mournes up to Commedagh and Donard, which can be approached with Tollymore. And on a good day, a beautiful view over to the Isle of Man.

Some lovely quiet spots up at The Drinns for picnics, taking in the views and contemplation.

The tracks with Tollymore are tough and trainers would not be recommended; boots with two pairs of thin socks protect ankles and prevent blisters.

It is possible to walk with Tollymore all day and not walk the same path twice in the same direction.

Maps are available on the net; google maps or Bing enables route planning in advance.

Parking within Tollymore is very safe unlike parking places around Mournes which can be very risky for damage to vehicles, thefts, etc.

There's some lovely walks in the Sleive Blooms; at Glenbarrow, near Rosenalis, up to the Iron Man, at Castletown, just outside Kinnitty and Monicknew, above Clonaslee, which is also a great spot for a night time ride;)

Not the most dramatic mountains in Ireland but beautiful nonetheless.

It depends if you have signal or not on that mountain.. I've the free version and I've been caught out a few times.. If you lose signal you lose GPS so it can be difficult to navigate if the trail is not well defined just be mindful of that.. Its personal choice good luck

I recommend a decent pair of boots.. I use the steel toes I get at work as they have a reinforced sole.. Great support.. Don't bother with runners you're feet will ache for days if you hike in them.. Also get waterproofs.. Trousers and a mac can be got very cheap and are lightweight f carrying.. Trekking poles are great for climbing up and down hills as they take the pressure off your joints.. Knees and back will get a hammering o

"Is it worth paying for the pro version of alltrails? Was thinking of doing benbaun, might be handy I suppose if you want to download the route. "

Yes. I use the paid version. It allows you download the map so you're not relying on phone signal all the time. It also gives you "off route alerts" when you wander off the trail.

Some of the trails they have listed aren't particularly visible so it's very useful.

Bring a power bank as well though. When you lose mobile signal your battery gets eaten very quickly.

"The Lough Ouler loop in Wicklow, it’s a heart shaped lake "

Tonelegee... Stunningly beautiful if you get the visibility. Its very wet at this time of the year though and crossing the river at the start and end can be tricky after rain. I arrived back down a couple of months ago on a really wet day only to discover that the river had risen in the time I was walking. I had to head off upstream to get across. Waterproof boots are the bare minimum you need for it but it's beautiful when you get above the lake.

Coumshingaun Lough Loop is a favourite of ours. Views are spectacular. Not a family friendly route though, tough in places.

One thing we've noticed aloy in recent months is discarded masks along most trails we've been on. Taking gloves and bag next time to pick them up.

"Coumshingaun Lough Loop is a favourite of ours. Views are spectacular. Not a family friendly route though, tough in places.

One thing we've noticed aloy in recent months is discarded masks along most trails we've been on. Taking gloves and bag next time to pick them up. "

On my list for next few weeks. Did Galtymore last thursday to clear the head, enjoyed it

"I wish I had more time to enjoy walking. The Mournes and surrounding forests are beautiful. I like a bit of fun when I am walking with the right person.

"The Lough Ouler loop in Wicklow, it’s a heart shaped lake

Tonelegee... Stunningly beautiful if you get the visibility. Its very wet at this time of the year though and crossing the river at the start and end can be tricky after rain. I arrived back down a couple of months ago on a really wet day only to discover that the river had risen in the time I was walking. I had to head off upstream to get across. Waterproof boots are the bare minimum you need for it but it's beautiful when you get above the lake. "

In just water proof boots i am sure the park rangers may have something to say about that

A menace to the wildlife u are

Ah, maybe that's why the deer all ran away?

You'd be grand up there in the nip these days as its so quiet in the winter. It's mentally busy in the summer months though... Noooooo privacy at all!

Now I've that picture in my head of McCarthy in just waterproof boots... in the Wicklow mountains... holding on firmly his weapon... overlooking the terrain from above like a proud viking.

Didn't know that all vikings were ginger. Is that your unique selling point cj, ginger pubes?

In fairness, the sun shines out from just behind them so there's not much reflection going on!
