When the cover version is better than the original

"I think Jeff Buckley’s version is better then Leonard’s and the Futureheads’ version is better then Kate’s.
I can think of 2-3 more but they’re fairly controversial "
Agree with both. Also
The Killers - Why don't you find out for yourself
Johnny Cash - Hurt |

Check out Bruce Springsteen's cover of "Stayin' Alive" from Melbourne on YouTube. They absolutely knocked it clean outta the park
One of the very best cover adaptations I have ever seen. |

"Sorry, ye have me started!!
Controversial but give it a listen.!!
U2s cover of The Beetles - Helter Skelter
Bonos voice hits the notes so well."
I'll have to respectfully disagree
Very few Beatles covers match the originals, but for me there are two exceptions...
With a Little Help from My Friends - Joe Cocker
and
Dear Prudence - Siouxsie & the Banshees |

In fairness, your argument is well backed up. |

"It doesn’t happen very often!
But I think Yola’s version of Goodbye Yellow Brick Road is better than Elton
Any other contenders?"
Indeed, it rarely happens. I have heard cover artists butcher the essence of the song by singing it in a style that contradicts the core of the lyrics.
But like many of you here I have heard some covers that are, in my humble opinion, superior to the original.
Such as Caleb Hyles 'Welcome to the Internet' |

Check out Matt Andersens version of Springsteen 'I'm on Fire'.
Agree about Shinedown - Simple man and Disturbed Sound of Silence.
And we can't forget that Ike and Tina made Proud Mary their own even though its a CCR original |

"Flying pickets cover of yazoos only u became a Xmas number one many years ago. The younger people in here JAZZWHO.
Yazoo Annie Lennox and Vince Clark. Love both versions "
Yazoo was Alison Moyet, Eurythmics was Annie & Vince
Cant agree that the Flying pickets acapella version is better, not saying it was bad but Moyet's voice is unique on that entire album |
