I was having a debate with a neighbour over the weekend about this . He said that he would feel cheated if he saw a performer who hadn’t written their own material . I was of the view that for many , as long as one is entertained , it doesn’t hugely matter .
What do you think ? Would it be different if it was a comedian for example as opposed to a band ? |

A comedian has to write their own material or else it doesnt work on stage in my opinion
A band can sing covers and the crowd will still like them ....Sure look at Oasis ....A Beatles covers band |

Plenty of commedians don't write all their own material. Even standup shows. They have line writers. I remember hearing a Frankie Boyle on a podcast recently and he was a writer for Jimmy Carr.
I don't feel that bands/singers HAVE to sing their own songs, but I definitely think more of those who do. |

Very interesting thread and a hard one to comment on. I think though that you definitely need talent whether you write or not write your own material. In my opinion though if you do write your own stuff it definitely shows how talented you are but like say Brendan O Carroll you can run out of steam as we’ve seen with Mrs Browns boys. In my opinion he’s only flogging a dead horse at this stage.
Sorry for the long winded reply |

I think there are different grades though . Tribute bands bottom of the ladder I guess but you can perform original material delivered for the first time written by someone else in an elite way |

What about band who release cover versions of old songs? Sometimes they are better than the original. Jimi Hendrix and U2 both covered all along the watchtower and did it better than Dylan.

Authentic talent seems like such a pretentious phrase.
There are plenty people with a talent for singing that can't write songs and visa versa.
Are any of the prestigious opera singers prolific writers.
Do people complain at the ballet that the person hasn't actually crafted the show or that their favorite actor didn't write the script. |

"I don’t know if he used that exact phrase but the idea of not writing your own stuff was abhorrent to him "
Ya I guess the idea is what is pretentious not the tern itself |

As mentioned above, Frankie Boyle writes stuff for Jimmy Carr and Bob Monkhouse wrote jokes for a host of top comedians back in the day. Some are talented writers, some are talented performers. A few are both but all are talented. |

"I do all my own original stunts . They mostly work out
Just sayin.
But do you design them ? Or do you have a stunt creator ?"
Quite honestly, shit just happens and I roll with it the best I can. Some spectacular results and always a surprise |
