The internet now obviates the necessity of having a specific red light district in any city; legislation in Northern Ireland to prosecute those who pay for sexual services has been enacted and enforced.
Those who wish to ply their trade, and punters for sexual services now use more covert methods to make contact.
Historically, prostitutes or sex workers as they are now called, lived in constant danger from pimps, violent punters and general street crime.
Many were coerced into this work by addiction, poverty, etc.
In the Adelaide Street area of the city, there used to be street walkers, but I have not seen any for decades, not since the 70s.
A couple of seedy hotels used to have a reputation that the Night Porter had contacts with hookers who lived locally.

The street that runs between Ormeau Avenue and the former Movie House cinema used to be play host to prostitutes - I'd notice them when going to the cinema. But as it's pedestrian/cycle only now, I assume that's changed.
As someone else said, I'd guess that online availability to sex, as well as the change in law to prosecute 'kerb crawlers' has probably killed off traditional prostitution of that type. |

"The best thing about Belfast is the road out of it
Best road in Belfast is the one to my house excuse me "
But I would walk 500 miles
And I would walk 500 more
Just to be the man who walks that Belfast Road
And fall down at that door

I'd walk a few miles? Don't let that fool you I'd walk much longer if I had too
As for Belfast I was always told about somewhere on the Dublin Road behind the Tesco express? You do see some hanging around.
You'd see a few ladies of the night standing in the street across the road from Limelight but it's been that long since I've been out that direction it could be all changed now. |
