How are the roads looking around your area?
I was driving quiet a bit at the weekend and noticed a lot of the roads are being tore up down around Wexford. Not the main roads - mostly back roads. Worrying to see as they will only get worse as the weather turns frosty and the heavy rain begins.
Do you think the road tax that we are paying is being spread evenly? |

Country roads are shocking alright.
But how do you quantify evenly spread spend of car tax.
Like if the main roads take majority of the traffic then those roads getting majority of the maintenance makes sense
I dont think it's about how the money is spread more about the people responsible for organising the work |

Contrary to popular belief, road tax doesn't actually pay for roads or road maintenance. Local and general tax pays for roads, m our roads are funded by the government and not directly by what we pay in road tax otherwise there would be more than enough to have great roads including rural roads. |

Incorrect. Motor tax payments are used for the regional and local roads. The government supplements them |

The motor tax south of the border goes directly to the revenue commissioners. The local authorities are then funded by the government from the exchequer but there is no direct link between motor tax and funding for roads/repairs. |

It is slightly different in (NI) but I was under the impression a change took place on the 1st January 2018 in ROI with the money raised through motor tax is now paid directly to the Revenue Commissioners, like all other taxation. This means the money people spend on motor tax is no longer being spent on the upkeep and maintenance of roads. |

The motor tax south of the border goes directly to the revenue commissioners. The local authorities are then funded by the government from the exchequer but there is no direct link between motor tax and funding for roads/repairs. "

That reminds me of a local radio station in Cavan years ago which suggested a road race to highlight the terrible roads in the county. It was to take place between Cavan Town and Killishandra. Only new cars allowed and the winner would be the first car car to finish the race with less than £3000 worth of damage done to the vehicle.
