An open fire only let's 30-40% of the heat from the fuel into the room... the rest goes up the chimney.
With a heatpump 400% (not a typo) of the heat from the fuel goes into the room. No chimney required. |

Ya but do I get the joyous task of cleaning it out each time I use it? |

"Heat pump.
In, out...on, off
Naaah, too temperamental...give me a bonfire with marshmallows to roast on a stick
It’s never off so can’t be temperamental
Yes to the marshmallows though "
The heat pump will get sticky though |

Open fire all the time ..great atmosphere...coal will soon be a thing of the past as they've voted to stop using it as it contributes to 25% of the carbon footprint |

You can’t beat the real feel of the heat. The sound. The smell. Watching the flames.
Especially in these dark nights.
It is proven to lower your blood pressure.
And is supposed to be good for our mental health.
Apparently it’s in our cave man instinct and helps give a feeling of security. |

"We aren't going to be moving off burning solid fuel for heat anytime soon if this thread is anything to go by"
The problem with moving away from the mainstream is finding equivalents which seduce people . Atheism struggles for example because mass brings the community together and atheism can be a bit lonely , Especially if you’re getting older or sicker or dying .
We need an environmentally friendly version of the open fire which is as seductive |

You're talking about a carrot. There isn't one unfortunately. Nothing sexy about a heatpump.
The way is going to be a stick. Carbon tax and controls on sale (like the smokey coal ban) will be the only way unfortunately.
Ireland will be dragged kicking and screaming away from burning for warmth at the point of use. |
