"Any form of "reality" TV, essentially exploitation of the participants who are often vulnerable."
I agree. Apart from the first series of big brother I've never watched anything along similar lines including I'm a celeb, strictly, x factor etc etc.
I've never seen a single episode of the Simpsons and Normal People was by far the biggest load of crap I've ever endured. If I start watching something I used to see it through which is what I did with Normal People and it was painful.
I changed tact with Bridgerton and turned it off after half an hour. |

I tried watching it a couple of times because of the hype. I've never seen anything less funny, apart from the time I broke my big toe. I didn't enjoy that much either. Still, it was arguably funnier than bbt. |

"I just couldn’t get into breaking bad. Tried to watch it twice but only got as far as the second season both times "
Wow, I'm surprised. Usually its the hump of the first 4 episodes that people have an issue with getting past because they're so slow and boring but they don't understand that it's on purpose because Walters life is dull and boring and I encourage them to continue and usually they like it.
You however have watched the first season so maybe it's just not for you.
I would suggest however that you try watching Better Call Saul which is a prequel series to some of the characters that are in BB and is pretty awesome.
Sometimes it's different strokes for different folks, pretty much like this whole site lol
Have you watched The Wire? ?? |

Billions is incredible

I agree with my naked friend here, Billions is awesome. Based on real life Federal cases. Damian Lewis was also brilliant in Homeland which is another of the best series of recent times. I was worried they'd fuck the ending up but they wrapped it up beautifully.
Thoughts on Homeland people? ?? |

Alot of TV shows are dumbed down nowadays. Anyone seen that Married at first sight? Was an interesting premise at beginning, using personality traits and human science to potentially match strangers to their partner for life.
When there was enough drama they tore up the script and opened it to unhinged, fame hungry wannabes who say it as opportunity to be on a tv show rather than for the original reasons.
Tried sons of anarchy aswell, just couldn't get into it and I tried. |

Is t having your wire bashed why we’re all here "
The Wire is without doubt one of the best, if not the best TV series to have ever been made. The Wire (and The Sopranos) changed the way TV shows were made and set a new benchmark for others.
I'd love to hear from anyone who has constructive criticism of The Wire if they've watched it in its entirety. ?? |

What did you think of how they dealt with the finale? Definitely nicely done to leave it open to a separate sequel or the Series returning imo. |

I know I'll be in the minority here, but The Sopranos never did it for me
Gave up a few episodes into the 2nd season. Nothing in it that hadn't been done before in movies, Goodfellas in particular
I also hated all the characters... couldn't empathize with any of them ...just wanted them all to be killed |

Can't love 'em all eh? It did help TV change the format of a story continuing through each episode with many characters having their own arcs. Hadn't really been done like that before.

I'd recommend sticking with Seinfeld, it really does grow on you. You kinda need to get into the rhythm of it, there's always about 10 different things going on at the same time. The 4th season is when it really hits its stride
Any Curb Your Enthusiasm fans should enjoy Seinfeld, it's another Larry David classic! |

+1 for breaking bad.
It's not terrible but definitely over hyped.
Lost was such a let down after a fantastic start and premise a show that was dragged out to death and was clear the creaters didn't have an end game in mind its basically the TV version of the matrix sequels |

This is interesting. I think its as close to the perfect show as you could get. Its really ruined TV for me, because I compare everything else to it.
Usuallly people have a 1-2 of the Wire and Sopranos in their order of choice, for me its always the Sopranos, just so layered. Its ridiculous but i've watched it 4 times now in its entirety, i'd never do that usually. And as i've aged myself its like i'm watching it completely new again.
The last time I watched it i'd under appreciated how funny it was in parts, some genuine laugh out loud moments for that kind of genre too. |

Good selections. The queens gambit on netflix was decent, different to the above but I found it really good.
BBC's The missing seasons 1+2 were really good aswell, if people like the "who dunnit" serial killer type thing.
Line of duty was good, obviously completely unbelievable account of police corruption but entertaining.
Another show called The Americans, based around 2 Russian spies living undercover in the US, posing as a married couple.
I will think of some more |

I didn't like the characters primarily, just couldn't get on board with them. I know Tony's supposed to be an anti-hero but he didn't gain my sympathy the way other famous anti-heroes like Stringer Bell or Walter White did
Also, shows like Buffy, the X-files and Babylon Five were doing the serialized character based storytelling before The Sopranos, but maybe not to the same critical acclaim |

You're dead right mate, Buffy etc was doing it but I just think the Demographic it was aimed at didn't click with those in suits. You know your shit for sure.
And, Stringer Bell, what a guy. Omar & Brother Bow Tie put paid to that wannabe while Avon Barksdake still lived.
Omar Little, one of the most complex characters ever to make it to the small screen. "Every man gotta have a code" What a cool muthafucka.

I thought that myself when I looked at this list but I'm just being honest about what I watch, no comparing them. Seal Team has really high production values, spend a ton of money and it's pretty accurate in both Ops and the operators private lives according to a lot of Seals and 2 that I know personally. Maybe it's my guilty pleasure lol |

You could categorise Love Island along with First Dates, Gogglebox, Married at First Sight etc as 'People Watching'. I find human behaviour fascinating and I enjoy observing it both in real life and on reality TV. Programmes like that are certainly not 'mind numbing crap' and those who think they are, are just not interested enough in human behaviour.
The soaps however are a different thing entirely |

It's great when they are real people. When they are fame hungry playing characters to ensure maximum exposure and in turn financial gain and attention then the show loses integrity and authenticity for me.
When it's real people, yes very interesting. When they target Instagram stars and people with large social media followings, no thanks |

When someone calls reality tv or any tv mind numbing or stupid I don't think the are calling everyone that watches it the same thing tbf.
O also think there are legitimate questions over the manipulation and tactics used in the production of alot of "reality tv" |

Exactly, love island whilst entertaining isn't a great guage into the experiment of human behaviour. It's probably closer to a soap opera in terms of it being partially choreographed.

Personally I think, although I don't watch them, soaps have a role to play in wider society. Sure they have many crazy things that happen in such a small locality but they deal with a lot of societal issues from Substance abuse, Domestic violence to a whole range of issues that the majority of peoples lives are at least touched by at some point. It shows the devastation, how they can be overcome but also says to any random person or teen who is in that same situation "your problem is not unique and here's how it can be fixed" or "you're not the only person who is/has gone through this"
So I think it comforts and educates the masses in a non lecturing way which is taken on board easier by those who would resist official channels.
Soaps certainly have their place in modern culture. |

"We like what we like..if you like love Island fair enough...not my cup of tea but I'm not coming n here saying its mind numbing crap and thereby insulting fans of the show.
Here, here
You could categorise Love Island along with First Dates, Gogglebox, Married at First Sight etc as 'People Watching'. I find human behaviour fascinating and I enjoy observing it both in real life and on reality TV. Programmes like that are certainly not 'mind numbing crap' and those who think they are, are just not interested enough in human behaviour.
The soaps however are a different thing entirely
Totally agree about to catch up on first two episodes of married a5 first sight australia and i cant wait..i love watching real life people interact and the masks starting to slip and im completely unapologetic for my love of reality tv
This is coming from a lady who always beat the crap out of us in the weekly quizzes. I wonder how would the reality tv nay sayers stack up against you. Not very well I reckon. Mrs "
Aaah now i hardly beat the crap outta ye....mind you cannot wait till they start up again |

"Lost. And Game of Throwns.
Both went way over …. Or beyond … my head… "
Wouldn't worry about is Mate because it's obvious the writers and actors on Lost were lost too as to what they were doing once the first season ended. Disaster and the ending was ridiculous. Talk about milking a horse or whatever that saying is |

The perfect phrase! I got the feeling from it that they literally only had originally intended it to be a movie which would have been reasonably decent, that is until the ending. I can't think of any logical way they could have even decently wrapped it up nicely then.
Perhaps a Deus ex Machina would have had to have been used to continue your TV lingo.
Shite either way. Never felt as cheated by any movie or TV show ever. |

I didn't like the characters primarily, just couldn't get on board with them. I know Tony's supposed to be an anti-hero but he didn't gain my sympathy the way other famous anti-heroes like Stringer Bell or Walter White did
Also, shows like Buffy, the X-files and Babylon Five were doing the serialized character based storytelling before The Sopranos, but maybe not to the same critical acclaim
"
And yet no one mentions Marlo. The most ruthless evil determined character ever. |

And I think it was Martin Scorcese who said Snoop was the most terrifying female character to have ever been on TV or Movie. High Praise indeed. |

Yes, you're right. That's exactly who it was. Appreciate the correction |

Two British 'classic' comedies that I never understood were The Goon Show, that the vast majority of people on this site will never have heard of, and Monty Python's Flying Circus, that has been lauded for decades, but which I thought was c###!

Loved 'The Americans' but never got to see that last season can't figure out where it can be watched.
Like another contributor I watched two or three seasons of 'Breaking Bad' but really enjoyed it up to the point where Walter went to do a drug deal instead of attending the birth of his 2nd child. That just fucked it up for me.
'The Wire' was amazing. I read that the guy who played the Preacher/Minister in it was the real Barksdale and the actor who played the Head Mistress of the school in season 2 was the real Head of a Baltimore School.
For anyone who has Sky or a dodgy box, for sheer escapism, good acting & a bit of craic, 'Resident Alien' (made by Spielberg's Amblin) is a show I really enjoyed.
"Despite being basically the opposite of the topic here's my favourites of the last 20yrs (my must watch shows)
The Wire
The Sopranos
The West Wing
House of Cards
Breaking Bad
Better Call Saul
Homeland
Seal Team
Love/Hate
I'm sure I'm forgetting a couple.
Fire away with your critiques lol
Good selections. The queens gambit on netflix was decent, different to the above but I found it really good.
BBC's The missing seasons 1+2 were really good aswell, if people like the "who dunnit" serial killer type thing.
Line of duty was good, obviously completely unbelievable account of police corruption but entertaining.
Another show called The Americans, based around 2 Russian spies living undercover in the US, posing as a married couple.
I will think of some more"

We've a lot of new members since this was last discussed. In an attempt to give the appreance of being cultured perhaps we should revise this list based on newbies, gems from recent seasons and shows that may have neither redeemed themselves or ruined their popularity. 7+h |

Curious what the opinion here is on Yellowstone if there are any watchers.
Most watched TV show in the states but the lib owned media have been silent. Basically the same story as old as time as Succession only the location and type of lifestyle are different. Different worlds.

I'd have said the same thing (I despise the programme) until I saw them on the Late Late around Christmas. They've done amazing work for St V de P for years and years and only went public when the charity asked them to. Also a very likeable and together couple, they held hands and finished each others sentences.
So really it doesn't matter how shite the programme is, they deserve all of their success as far as I'm concerned. Mrs |

Speaking of which, the late late has served it's time. I know it's an institution, but time to put it in one. |

Television as a popular communication medium is in long-term (terminal) decline; audiences are dropping-off and finances in terms of advertising revenue is being diverted to other more popular media.
The quality of programmes is declining; its heyday is long in the past.
When the Morecambe and Wise Christmas Special from 1971 is broadcast as a highlight of Christmas TV, fifty years after its original transmission it says everything about the quality of current TV.
I personally watch much more online nowadays; as most others do too.
Television, as originally envisioned by Lord Reith, is history!

You're right about Television being doomed in the way its broadcast and consumed but TV shows and the art of story telling via this medium is in a golden age. Take The Wire for example, none of the big networks would never have commissioned it and it would never have seen the light of day if it hadn't been for Showtime. Same goes for Breaking Bad and AMC Netowrks. Storytelling will be around forever, only the format and delivery method will change.

Like I said, the Nielsen Ratings have been scoring it higher than every other show on every network for the last few years yet there's barely a thing mentioned about it.
It just goes to show how out of touch the network producers are. They tend to forget about that vast expanse of the US between NY and CA. |
