Most sexually experienced adults our age already carry the virus. They don't even bother testing for it at the GUM clinic as it's so common.

Still if you can get your hands on a vaccine then take it. I think it's only generally offered to kids in Ireland, but I could be wrong.

A trip to your GP or local STI clinic should answer all your questions..

It got me thinking

As you stated that most of adult population have it...is there any purpose of having vaccination ?

I am only thinking out loud...

I thought purpose of vaccination is to prevent from getting it.

That's why they give it to kids. They are trying to get them vaccinated before they get infected. Its a great programme.

I think its as a preventative measure for young women to avoid development for cervical cancer.

It's not a massive risk to us as men

I know a man who has throat cancer caused by HPV. I think it was originally given to just girls because of the link with cervical cancer, but have since been discovered to be a major factor in many types of cancer which can effect both sexes.

I should have said not as big a risk, but I wasn't actually aware that it had been linked in a greater way thanks. I need to educate myself a bit more on it

The hpv vaccine is given to students in first year of secondary school. 3 or 4 years ago or was decided to vaccinate the boys as well as girls.

The vaccine needs to be given BEFORE there is any sexual activity.

There are many variations of hpv. For example the one that causes cervical cancer differs from the one that causes genital warts or cold sores.

There is no point in taking vaccine after you have become sexually active.

If your child didn’t get the vaccine, you can get it off your gp who will do it free of charge, but you have to pay for the jab x 2 or 3 times at a cost of €250 approx per jab.

HPV does not "cause" coldsores. It is the HSV virus you mean, HSV TYPE 1 AND 2.

Yeah HPV is cancer causing (of which there are loads of different types). HSV (of which there is 2 types) is herpes. A similar but different virus

You're too old for it.

Sometimes we need to accept that it's the next generation that'll benefit from advances in science and technology rather than ours.
