9/11 was one of the “do you remember where you were” moments of a generation, now almost 20 years later, do you remember where you were or what you were doing when it happened or when you heard about it?
Or other infamous moments in history? |

It was my first year in Ireland working as a butcher in Euro Spar in Lucan. As the all Ireland games was on there was a large TV display in the front of the Shop so the shoppers could watch the matches while they where getting the groceries.
The day the Twin towers was struck the whole shop came to a stand still watching the whole thing on fold. I will never forget the tense feeling you got when they showed the footage of the first plane hitting the towers. |

I was in London at tge time and went to my aunts house for lunch. The telly was on and it took me a couple of minutes to realise it wasnt a film. Had been up the towers a couple of years before. Made a point to go back to ground zero 2 years ago.Still hard to think of all those people who were killed and couldnt be given a proper funeral. |

Just started first week of my new job in Christchurch in Dublin. The boss was the only one with dial up internet so we all gathered around his Pc in his tiny office and watched it unfold in disbelief. |

My late mother in law was in hospital having a big toe removed, watching the news in her room panic struck. Her daughter & husband (my sister in law) were in the US at that time, on a travelling holiday. We weren’t sure where they were at that time. It was the worst 48 hours of my life |

I (mrs) was on holidays in spain and walked by a bar and saw it on tv and thought it was a movie until i saw "breaking news live" written on the bottom of the screen. The bar was full and there wasnt a sound. You could hear a pin drop. I worked with a girl who was supposed to be on the flight that crashed into the pentagon. She got a terrible tooth infection and couldnt fly. To this day she believes someone was looking out for her somewhere. |

I remember exactly where I was.
I was 12 years old, came home to drop off my school bag to go to a book store.
Seen it on TV and thought it was some movie. Didn't pay any attention to it and moved on.
Next day we had a minute of silence in school. That's when I found out it wasn't a movie. |

At a meeting in Dunnes Stores in cork with the managers
Left to go downstairs to see abandoned trollys full of food everywhere and people all gathered around a television set watching sky news
Drove back to Dublin listening to the radio
Got back home straight onto sky news |

In Dublin Airport with a friend who was flying to ibiza, then everyone was talking about a plane crash in America and the notice board said all flights delayed and my brother called me and said "someone just kamikazed the twin towers" |

Was in the office when someone said go to the boardroom and we all crammed into it to watch tv just as the second tower was getting hit. Surreal moment as the structural engineers we worked with looked on in disbelief as they fell.
We spent all afternoon watching then went home to watch more on TV. |

Was in my way to do a delivery in ballsbridge and a colleague rang me, there was a tv in the reception, then next drop was Sandyford and by then the enormity kicked in, final stop was our Blsnchardstown, no TV but went over to Dolly Heffernans pub and it was jammed with people just staring at TV
Remember by movements that afternoon very vividly |

Seven years old, living in LA and was just about waking up for school, when I heard my father shouting: “HOLY MOLLY” and telling my mother to come and see the TV.
I saw the second aircraft (United 175) hitting the other tower. Went to school and had a sombre assembly. I still was not understanding what was happening - especially, as I was upset none of my cartoons were on after returning from school.
A couple of years ago, I met the parents of a junior flight attendant working one of the flights.
I knew who their daughter was immediately after they told me who they were. A chill ran down my spine, I froze and cried. It just hit me real hard.
Her mother cried along with me and asked me for a hug. I don’t think they could ever speak about their daughter without pain and could (understandably) feel any less anguish.
I spent time at the WTC grounds memorial today, as I am currently Stateside. Very surreal and moving. More today than usual.
Nothing peeves me off more seeing people there taking smiley selfies and sharing kisses in front of the names that have perished. Please have some respect!

Belfast city centre meeting with a customer when some of the staff drew our attention to the TV. Within minutes the bar was full of people who had just come in to watch what was happening.
Everywhere I went that day was the same and there was a crowd outside every electrical retailer looking at the images on all the screens in the windows.
Colleagues of mine were sent to New York the next day to help in the aftermath but spent 2 days in a deserted Heathrow before being sent home again as the US government were refusing help from outside agencies at that point and wouldn't give permission for the flight. |

In Easons picking up a book. Heard it over the radio there. Went home to watch it unfold on sky news. My father rang his sister to see if one of my cousins was OK as he was working close to them on a building. Thankfully he was stranded on the Brooklyn bridge in a traffic jam before the first plane hit. |

Living in Boston at the time and house was very close to Logan airport, very used to the noise of aircraft traffic. Woke up that morning and like a lot of people have said here, thought I was seeing a movie trailer. Sat on porch that night and skys were quiet except for a few US Air Force jets passing by. It was eerie how quiet the streets were with traffic too for the following few nights. It’s one of those moments where everyone that’s old enough to remember DOES remember where they were and what they were doing |

Relation of mine was on flight 93 (2nd cousin). My grandparents (now deceased) always maintained there was no heroic struggle that brought the plane down, rather it was shot down to save the Capitol building which was supposed target.
A lot of families haven't got answers to specific questions asked.
Hate the conspiracy theory craic though, dreadful tragedy either way.
Was starting my leaving cert year when I heard about it in school.

I was on top of the Twin Towers the March beforehand on a St Patrick's trip out to visit my late cousin in New York and i will always remember the fateful day the towers came down as i had just returned home from work and like everyone else i just couldn't believe what i was seeing before my eyes truly truly heartbreaking stuff and to think today is the 20th anniversary is just a little bit crazy. |

Coming home from secondary school when I heard.
My uncle worked in the city but wasnt in work that day. My gran couldnt get through to him cos he was on the internet.
She was going nuts till she got through to him. His wife was a nursing manager in a childrens hospital nearby and people were shipped to that hospital. My uncles best friend was in one of the first fire engines to respond. Everyone in that engine lost their lives on that day.

Yes, I was going to say millions but I thought people might find that a stretch to believe.
Men, Power, Ego and all bundled into some religious fundamentalism with a bit of oil and litium thrown in. It's all sad really. |

I was in the Boeing factory in Seattle that day. I was there with another guy from Belfast and it was him who broke the news to everyone. With in minutes you could have heard a pin drop in the flight shed we were working in. It was like time stood still.
All I could think as it unfolded was my dad telling me where he was when JFK was murdered.
With reference to what someone said earlier, about the notion that the plane their relative was on had been shot down. I still and actually as recently as lastnight, watched the towers collapse. I can't see how it's possible or logical that a building would implode the way the towers did from a aircraft strike.

No, luckily I was a bit further down the NJ coast, I distinctly remember how eerily quiet the skies were in the days after, the only things flying were air force jets. I was on the first flight from JFK to Ireland, I think it was the 16th of September, the dust and smell in NYC was a horrible experience. |

Came in for dinner in the evening after working on the farm all day and it was on the news, remember thinking even then this is going to be world changing event and a where were you when it happened. Had drove over the dog in the tractor and couldn't believe he wasn't even injured never mind killed. |

In work at a PC, opened up the internet and on MSN homepage there was a picture of the tower on fire from first plane strike, called a few people over and within 10 minutes the entire factory was silent listening to the news unfold on radio and online. Surreal moment and 2 people had family in New York so it was really disturbing seeing that reaction too. A terrible day in history. |

Back home in Oz. Owing to the time difference, it happened during the night (or maybe just before bed but there was no breaking news alert) so when we got up in the morning it was everywhere.
I remember walking into the lounge and my sister and my mum were glued to the television which set of alarm bells as they were never up before me. I told them that they should have woke me but like everyone, everywhere, it was just a very sad and surreal experience. |

I was cutting hair in a Barber shop in Galway. The whole shop stopped and just watched in disbelief. I'm not even sure we finished the haircuts. I'm sure we did but I just remember time seeming to stop.
Despite the conspiracy theories and the endless amounts of tasteless comments , in general I mean not aimed at people here that day is forever etched into my mind. |
