Guns n Roses for me, though I don't know if I'd consider them an 80s act, as they released material in the 1990s & 00s (albeit sporadically) and have been touring since 2017 or so.

It's very difficult to name just one 80s band. I like almost all of those mentioned. Special mention to the Beat and the ska bands in particular. I loved the fashion also. Even though in hindsight it looks pretty hideous

Gives me goosebumps. One of the first tracks to go on when I get some new hifi kit. Still sounds fantastic.

Giorgio WAS the sound of the 80's.

He did his first solo tour last year at the age of 80.

Pixies Where Is My Mind - surely one of the best songs ever, never mind the 80s

Reply privately (closed, thread got too big)

By (user no longer on site)  over a year ago

The Human League for me. They were at the bleeding edge of electronic innovation. Giorgio Moroder and Donna Summer kick-started the electronic age in the late 1970's, but THL were the right group at the right time, for the beginning of MTV. The music, the look, the beats. They're iconic for me.

Yes, I suppose they would be the classics, not necessarily my favourites now but they were what I listened to or was influenced more heavily at the time. It is difficult to choose, especially if not given a genre either. And some artists span across more than one decade with their classic hits.

The first songs I clearly remember listening to as a primary school child in the 80s are Queen "We will rock you" and "We are the Champions" but they're 70s songs.

"Giorgio Moroder peaked the 80's with Together in Electric Dreams.

Fantastic track!!!

Gives me goosebumps. One of the first tracks to go on when I get some new hifi kit. Still sounds fantastic.

Giorgio WAS the sound of the 80's.

He did his first solo tour last year at the age of 80. "

There was a great segment about him in The Sparks Brothers documentary recently. He did an amazing album with Sparks in '79. Check out Sparks No 1 Song in Heaven.

The guy deserves his own documentary. Also if no one has seen The Sparks Brothers documentary its absolutely class

"Best Band / Artists of the 80s .. you can only choose one. Post it below

Just the one?! That's wayyyy too tough to choose. There's so many. My 80s were made by the likes of Michael Jackson, Madonna and Queen but I wasn't much of a music head really, more so in recent years. I listen to so much stuff and would never be able to tell you the name of the song or artist "

Ah the gladioli. I know Morrissey is like marmite but I love him.

There's a brilliant cover band called "These Charming Men". They bring the gladioli to their concerts, almost like being at the real thing, they're so good "

East of town

Saw Moz at National Stadium then Point Depot as solo and supporting Bowie - saw him at INEC in Killarney (ringleader of the tormentors album release) and after that Cork Opera house all great gigs

Then he played in Marquee felt it underwhelming and recently in 3arena and after gig said to myself that is the last time I will be going to Moz

Am a big Smiths/ Moz fan but feel life not as good as he used to be

Yes to These Charming Men they are best Smiths tribute band - EVER

The only question is which is better

Enola gay

Sailing on the seven seas

Pandora’s box

Or walking on the Milky Way

"

Enola gay for me anyway

Saw Jimi at the forever young festival, he is still excellent live and due to return for the same festival this year.

ABC who are brilliant are also due to play the rock festival in Fairyhouse next year along with adam and the ants, Tony Hadley, hue and cry plus more

Loved Jimmy Sommerville.

Don't Leave me this way was his best I think.... but don't miss out on the earlier version by

Harold Melvin & the Blue Notes which is pure sex.

Agree with all…. Such an eclectic mix in the 80’s which doesn’t seem to be the case so much nowadays. The fall out and mix of 60’s rock, 70’s punk, Eurovision, ska, reggae…. Put it all in the mix and the 80’s was the best.

Few more to the mix, surprisingly no one mentions the Waterboys or That Petrol Emotion.

"It's very difficult to name just one 80s band. I like almost all of those mentioned. Special mention to the Beat and the ska bands in particular. I loved the fashion also. Even though in hindsight it looks pretty hideous

For mainstream, 80's music was the best, topped off by LIVE AID ,to see the list of artists for that day was just UNREAL !!! The 80's were just fantastic for music from start to finish..AC/DC released BACK IN BLACK.. VINCENT HANLEY brought us MT USA . Michael Jackson's THRILLER came along...THE POLICE released EVERY BREATH YOU TAKE .. LIVEAID..then GUNS N ROSES threw out APPETITE FOR DESTRUCTION ..No doubt about it ..music wise...the 80's ROCKED !!
